Co-op mode request for Fallout New Vegas

Post » Tue Dec 29, 2009 12:56 pm

Historically, Obsidian (and Black Isle before them) has been good about adding multiplayer co-op to their games. It would be really awesome if they are planning on adding such mode into this game. It would be even better if there was some kind of vehicle combat. Anyone who thinks these would be good ideas, go ahead and reply.

-Best wishes to everyone :mohawk:

Why does NV have to be co-op? What is this fascination with buddying up?

Play Halo :P

People want features from other games implemented because it sounds good on paper.

Not going to happen. Obsidian are basically making a big piece of DLC; don't expect any new features.

Also, can you imagine how many more bug/whining threads there would be if multiplayer were introduced into one of Beth's already bloated, bug-filled engines?

I highly doubt it;I think they want to focus on the single player only for fans of the old fallouts (I think)

I just don't see that happening. That would have to be the main focus of the game for it to make sense.

I've heard that Interplay is working on a Fallout MMORPG though - anybody up to date with that stuff? Haven't heard about it for a while...

I generally tend to avoid multiplayer games; not because I don't like them, but because I don't like the people who play them. I can't even begin to describe some of the hateful and immature bile that has come through my headset from other players.

My other big complaint with Multiplayer is that it either ends up feeling tacked on (Far Cry 2), a breeding ground for stupidity (Halo, GTA4), or repetitive shallow nonsense (Left 4 Dead). With the RPG element, especially in this gaming age, it would certainly be doomed to be either a World of Warcraft crap-fest or having a party-member who constantly steals your kills and/or gets you killed. I'd rather just keep Fawkes... at least he doesn't teabag me after getting me killed.

A much more palatable alternative would be LAN games, where you know exactly who you're playing, and can get up and dump Cheetos all over them if they step out of line. heh.

Same effort would have to be up in that as with going full MMO multiplayer there is no "small scale" netcode....

haha that screenshot was pretty funny Shiva.

So far I've gotten pretty negative comments.

The critical factor to me here is that RPGS (good ol pen and paper) are based on small group play. There was something cool about a group of friends having a party based adventure. Me and my bro used to split up a party way back when we were playing the D&D gold box games. That type of experience translated pretty well into games like Diablo, System Shock 2 and Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. I played BG2 with my girlfriend and we had fun. Personally, I agree with Dilapsor, most of the kids you run into in multiplayer games are idiots. Halo or WOW type of games just don't cut it for me either. I am talking about the type of experience you'd get with a group of friends (probably 2 at best, and no more than 4) you trust and get along with at a LAN level. Fallout 3 and Oblivion, while awesome, completely miss the point in this respect.

My favorite Fallout game was probably 2. You could have a varied party and truck around in your Corvega with a big trunk. But the AI was dismal and Sulik would usually spray everyone in the way. That was funny at first but after a while it was pretty annoying. It would have rocked if another person could take control of characters and their stats. Eventually the Infinity engine was progressed to where BG and IWD had good co-op. Bethesda does not have a track record of making co-op or even plain multiplayer games, but Obsidian does. I honestly doubt Obsidian will have enough time to implement it, but with clever writing and coding it could be done. And if they have any type of respect for the player base they will take their time doing whatever it is they are doing. It is pretty early to say at this stage, and I don't think anything has been set in stone about the engine, and I don't see a reason why Obsidian should be forced to use Bethesda's buggy engine. The Unreal engine 3 would probably be ideal. Mass effect, another RPG I like, was based on U3 but lacked co-op, but I bet the code was pretty much already there, it just needed to be taken further.

Anyhow, thanks for the replies. :nuke:

I think the game would benefit from co-op, but it isn't high on my list of priorities. And you wouldn't be able to use VATS, which would hurt the gameplay for many people.

Yeah, I think I'm still of the mind that maybe a co-op Fallout game would work best as a spin-off built from the ground up to take advantage of that sort of gameplay. I would worry that taking a game like this and just adding the option would be kind of a tacked-on thing; and that doesn't always end up working as well as it could. A Fallout game where co-op/ AI companions played a central role in the construction of the game would be the "best" option that I could see.

Still... so long as it doesn't take away from the single-player portion of the game, I can't say it would really affect me one way or another. (ie, if realistically the only options are to either make a single-player game with a not very good co-op component tacked on, or a game where the single-player was short-changed because too much time was spent on a sub-par co-op component; then I'd rather have the former than the latter.)

beth needs to make bug less games before even thinking about a MP or COOP feature

as for obsidian....most people who have posted are right....NV is sounding like a huge DLC like thing

don't set yourself so high that it hurts when you fall

It was only in Tactics that I know of, and that was a spin-off variant. Traditionally there is no Multi-player in Fallout. ~reason being (one anyway), is that the games tried to foster a sense of desolate isolation ~that doesn't float well with buddies in co-op.

Every poll I've read in two years that was asking about multiplayer has been inundated with vehement "No"s (Some of them mine :embarrass: )

haha that screenshot was pretty funny Shiva.

I have my own...

For the moment we're keeping all New Vegas discussion in the official thread, let's continue this discussion over there.

More general discussions of multiplayer belong in the official multiplayer discussion thread, which is in this forum as well.
