How do I fix my friend?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:47 am

Sounds like your friend just enjoys a good game. I'm sorry this offends you so...

Would you guys read what I am saying... TES Ronin, read my previous posts "I CAN NOT HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT A DIFFERENT GAME WITHOUT HIM SAYING "QUIT THAT GAME, PLAY OBLIVION" I WANT TO TALK ABOUT ONE GAME AND HE CHANGES THE TOPIC..."

So, in theory, if ya wanna have conversation about a game, for example, Deus Ex, he would change the subject to Oblivion?

Yes...

Edit: FYI I am not an Oblivion Hater, I just don't like the non-stop hearing of how great it is, and the topic changes, its nothing personal Oblivionites, I am just more of a Morrowindian myself.

Maybe your friend isn't broken, maybe he just has an opinion.

SRSLY, Zalphon...

Your friend appears to be deeply infatuated with Oblivion. There are a lot of people who are deeply infatuated with a lot of games, even to the point which you are describing. There's little to nothing you can do about it. You could try the aforementioned methods of playing Morrowind and trying to get him into it, but be prepared for the likelihood that such a method will probably end with the two of you bitterly discussing which game is better anyway.

If it annoys you that he switches the conversation to Oblivion if you bring up gaming at all, then perhaps the only solution is to not bring up gaming at all.

Bah, I guess I will deal with it, I am not going to never talk about gaming, because he is around.

Haha, my gamer friends know me as the guy who never shuts up about Morrowind, so I bet they know how you feel :). I hadn't seen this friend of mine in over two years, yet at his wedding reception, I accidentally slipped in the word "Morrowind" within 45 seconds of him greeting me. I was one of only 4 people that he knew from high school who showed up (most of our former classmates were at another wedding), so at least I wasn't a total ass :P. Two of the other guests complained about the other wedding the whole time they were there, and the fourth guest was the bride's cousin :P. So at least I showed up, and I did change the subject away form Morrowind after a couple of minutes :).

edit: Sorry for my overuse of emoticons.

Read the quote I gave DanielKay... I don't like talking about Morrowind and him barging in and saying "OMG The Elder Scrolls Morrowind is the greatest game in the history of the universe., PLAY OBLIVION!!!! 100,000,000,000X BETTER!!!"

I don't care he has his own opinions, I just want to be able to have a Morrowind conversation, not hearing a word about Oblivion (That game screwed up the lore big time, and as far as I am concerned, the Cyrodiil it took place in is completely Canon, but that is another conversation all together)

The easiest solution is to not talk be talking about it outside of a gaming setting in the first place. Each person is different, and you need to be able to adapt. If you don't like when he runs on about Oblivion, the other option is to learn to zone out until hes done talking. The trick is making it seem like you were listening the entire time :ninja:

No the most overused is... The graphics are dated...

If this is his excuse, show him MW with MGE and all the texture replacers you can get your hands on. With a few choice mods it looks just as good as Oblivion.

Sounds like you have three choices:

1. Stop discussing games (ANY games) around your friend.
2. Get new Morrowind-loving friend to hang out with.
3. Ignore friend, social life, family, school, job and pets and just play Morrowind. :)

I personally don't discuss gaming that much with my friends, even the ones that game as much as me. It isn't socially conducive.

so your friend has an over-zealous taste for oblivion. so what? he isnt broken for liking oblivion better, but hes sounds kind of annoying when he keeps saying the same thing over and over again. just lend him your copy and have him try it, and if he says "EWW MORROWIND" put a piece of paper on the cover that says "The Elder Scrolls V: [Insert name Here]"

Well. i think i see where you're coming from Zalphon, i have this bud who just won't shut up, not necessarily about games, but in general he won't shut up, he does sometimes randomly change subjects, and similarly we disagree on topics, i'm the kind of guy who enjoys silence every once in a while, but he doesn't stop talking, he's like a walking radio , so do what i do, tell him to shut the **** up and listen to what you are trying to say. Usually it works for me, as the startle he gets from my break of silence usually makes him pay attention long enough to listen to the important idea you're trying to say.

And that one isn't true anymore... Whenever I play Oblivion now I get annoyed by the horrible water reflections, mediocre LOD and objects popping in compared to Morrowind's distant land and water from Morrowind Graphics Extender.

Morrowind doesn't beat Oblivion's graphics on every aspect, but sure on a whole lot of them. SSAO, godrays, distant land, water with waves and sun effects on shallow water, etc.

Oh it is, I know a guy who really likes Oblivion (and would love Morrowind), but his excuse was, "The graphics are too dated..."

I would love to see him go look at Arena or DF graphics

I'd say the ultimate fix is ACCEPT that some people have different tastes instead of trying to force your views on them.

Certainly true, though if it's specifically the fact that they're preaching how good Oblivion is because it lets you play after the main quest, the best thing is to let them see it isn't the only game with this trait. You can just let your friend play Morrowind, and if your friend won't play it, you can show that friend you playing it, best if you have lots of texture replacers and Morrowind Graphics Extender and such to dispel any "The graphics are too ugly." complaints, and them play through the main quest in front of that friend, to show that Bethesda has already been making games where you can continue playing after the mainquest before Oblivion, assuming that watching you play the game doesn't make your friend want to play it. If this doesn't change the friend's mind, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with it at all.

Oh it is, I know a guy who really likes Oblivion (and would love Morrowind), but his excuse was, "The graphics are too dated..."

That excuse is pretty true, though. With enough mods, Morrowind can look alright compared to modern games, but this is only on the PC version, and only if you choose to download those mods. If you, for example, don't have a computer to run the game, or have a computer that can run Morrowind but it's not good enough to safely use Morrowind graphics extender and what not, the game still won't look good.

I would love to see him go look at Arena or DF graphics

I think that it can safely be said that, for anyone who would refuse to play Morrowind on the basis that the graphics are dated, one look at Daggerfall's graphics would be enough to drive that person away.

Just show him that games which don't end are a dime a dozen. Morrowind, Fable, Mount & Blade, NetHack, Fallout 2 (I think? It's been a while), every single MMORPG ever, Tetris....

The due is probably new to elder scrolls- he just needs to educate himself a little, and you can help him. Just talk about what could be better in Oblivion, then say hey you know game does that really well: Morrowind. Well you don't have to use morrowind, but show him that he doesn't love Oblivion because its Oblivion-- But instead he loves the fundamentals of that make it what he wants. Show him that. Then he can have a broader view of what he likes in a video game, then he can see out side of oblivion.
