I am the Hoplite!

I too would love the same thing as the author of this post as I am a love of greek mythos and ancient greek history and would love to play the role of a hoplite/spartan warrior, or at least use the tools of the trade as 1 and look like 1.

its amazing how the younger generation are actually becoming less and less educated, knowledgeable....etc

Its sad that you were born in the blackberry/internet age I know, but please read books and watch something other than power rangers.

spears are usually two handed weapons that is true BUT they can be used as one handed weapons (Hoplite used such spears) also you have shorter versions that are one handed weapons and ALSO throw-able, swords were actually not that widely used in ancient combat, pole weapons and javelins and shields and bows were much more effective.

if the guy wants to use a spear and a shield then by all means why not, damn even I want to try that out it would be awesome, in ancient Greece the Phalanx were the most fearsome infantry formations, though vulnerable to enemy flanking maneuvers. They were able to repel many invasions using such long range melee weapons.

why oppose adding good things to a game : /
I dont think a lone hoplite would be any more vulnerable then say a trident welding gladiator (cant remember what they were called, retiarius I think).

I wouldn't say they were much more effective, after all the Romans conquered the known world mainly with short swords (and the Greek phalanx failed miserably against the roman legions). More widely used yes, but they were much cheaper equipment as well.

On topic, gief spears. Maybe not the phalanx style hoplite as that's a formation troop really. Soloing as that is ridiculous realistically, but then again this is fantasy. :P I would like to see 2h spears and smaller one handed spears used with a shield though.

Realistically, a Hoplite by himself wouldn't be very effective, but this is a fantasy game after all.

Edit: Perhaps an Ekdromoi could, since he wore lighter armor, had a smaller Aspis, sword and spear.

I'd love to see this style of combat as an option. While it's true the player couldn't fight in a phalanx there are still quite a few places in TES games where such a fighting style would be quite useful. There are tons of places where you come out of a small hallway into a large room filled with monsters. Get their attention and back yourself into the entry of the hallway and you have a one person hot gate. This is already the standard method of fighting I use for my melee characters, all that's lacking is a one handed spear and a hoplon shield.

simple solution, long spear = two handed and short spear = shorter length and usable with a shield, also possibly thrown like a javelin? that would be pretty cool.

The short spear is much more versatile than a longer pike/long spear. giving you more thrusting reach than a sword without giving up the mobility.

A spear would be nice, but as far as a whole phlalanx manuever, that sounds a bit much, as TES is a solo game, not about big epic battles. Maybe the weapon choices should be a sword, axe, mace, AND spear, something like that where it is just another weapon but without a drastically different playstyle

If spears are included in the game, and are a major skill of any of the warrior classes, I don't see why there's need for a seperate hoplite class. A warrior/knight would be able to use a lance/javelin/spear, and hopefully along with a shield, so why a hoplite then? On the snowy, frigid plains of skyrim....uh oh! Here comes a weird, solo hoplite! Run.... He's wearing bronze and freezing his butt off!

If this was a war strategy game, and multiple characters were controlled at the same time, I'd be all for inclusion of a hoplite...as he does what a hoplite does...working in a formation and not doing the stupid whirling dervish moves from 300. In elder scrolls it would be like having a charioteer without a chariot, or even a gladiator without an arena.

Have you never played a video game before? Everytime a spear has been added it has been as a 2 handed weapon. Ok maybe not every time but a large majority, you shouldn't need the "what" post. Taking the Oblivion style a spear would have been a 2 handed weapon. My hope is that a spear can be either or.

Sorry for any confussion

Was just sayin hoplites and greek spearmen in useful always used 1H spears with shields, although 2H would be cool. But that makes the shield kinda obselete

GENIUS!!! I would love it if this were added, Spear and shield was one of the deadliest combinations in all of history.
