The brotherhoods actions justified

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 6:58 am

I was wondering this, cause one of the worst things about fallout new vegas, is the brotherhood that has gone into decline. I have loved the Brotherhood since day one of me playing fallout, kinda gets to me.

I was wondering, in one ending, where they take Helios one and take all ''INAPPROPRIATE'' tech from travelers, is that really ok, or do you think that killing them is worth the safety of people that have tech...

The Brotherhood have been in-decline since Fallout 2 because they are no longer really relevant, they were the only advanced and educated group really in the Fallout 1 era and believed themselves the proper custodians of all the pre-war world most dangerous toys - a noble goal I suppose, they never sold the weapons for money or anything, merely kept them. But the NCR has proved itself far more capable than the Brotherhood and in response to growing tensions and eventually hostilities it's clear that successive Brotherhood administrations have decended further into extremism and fanaticism of their goals without giving proper regard to any other alternatives; the folly of having the "elders" (I presume on the assumption that they are wiser or more experienced) in-charge of the organisation, societal development stagnants and especially in the Brotherhood's largely introverted world.

They aren't justified in basically mugging other people at the roadside for what they deem "inappropriate", that's a very broad spectrum with these guys.

If you like, they ransack caravans back in the NCR too if you go by what Cass says in guerrilla style tactics. They are at war with the NCR all over California don't forget, and making an alliance between those in the Mojave and the NCR doesn't end the total war (specifically stated in the ending). But notice that as soon as peace is achieved they go immediately back to their ways, one of the conditions for the truce is that the NCR relinquish all of it's power armour too.

The Brotherhood is an obselete organsiation that tries to control the balance of power through technology, nothing more, and they'll persue that goal in what-ever way possible - be it acting like raiders against carvans or negotiating with the NCR the surrender of their power armour.

That I believe is the most potent example of what the Brotherhood does, what possible reason does the Brotherhood have for wanting to take back the power armour? Either it's weakening it's potential future enemy or, equally likely, they just don't like anyone else to have power armour; yeah it sounds highly unpragmatic but that's how the Brotherhood works.

Not anymore I'd say, the time when their brigandry was useful is over now. But killing them off might be a bit extreme, IIRC only Hardin ending will make them a considerable raider group. Killing them would of course eliminate even the chance of them gaining power...

I do not believe thier actions are justified in the least, but if you really love them, you can ally them with NCR and the Mojave chapter at least, tries to protect people while being paid in tech by NCR.

Allying them with the NCR before doing the Independence ending simply causes them to have no endslide and forms a "status quo" where they simply inhabit Hidden Valley. That's what I normally do.

You need to exterminate them. If the BOS would learn to change like the ones in the CW then I would let them live, but they don't. The BOS will not change and now they are no longer needed. They used to make sure that technology stayed out of the wrong hands, but now it seems that they just keep it out of everyone's hand. They are obsolete now.

I think that they deffinetley have downsides but all factions have at least one down side, to be honest i like them a little bit, but i would rather have them as a friend than an enemy

Wipe them out. They claim to salvage advanced tech to keep humanity from destroying itself again, under the guise of being all high and mighty knights. The reality is, they steal, murder, and anything else that they can do to pry advanced tech away from the hands of anyone who's not them. Just look at what they did at the Followers outpost. If you think that's good and knightly, you need your head examined. I wouldn't care if they just said, "Ok, we're evil." but they don't. They're more like the Enclave than one might think. The Enclave is about "keeping the race pure" and the Brotherhood is about "keeping everything advanced for themselves". The Enclave is/was under the guise of a wholesome pre-war government, and the Brotherhood is under the guise of being knightly and "for the good of the people" crap. The Capital Wasteland chapter was okay solely because they followed things that the other chapters didn't follow, such as helping people in need. This "Codex" is a self-serving document that teaches you how to become a dike, plain and simple. If they had the man power and resources they would take everything that they could and force a dictatorship on the lands that they controlled, just like the Legion. That's why every faction wants them dead, because theyaren't peaceful heroic people. They pose a minimal to moderate threat to each faction, because they like to take other people's s**t! They're thieves and murders with shiny armor, nothing more.

The Enclave is more about the supremacy of their organisation than "race", just saying as I've already commented on this topic.

If they changed their ideology to "We will prevent the really dangerous technology from falling into the wrong hands" then I'd say it would be justified for them to take places like Helios One or Sierra Madre.
Certain places, especially super weapons, should be guarded by someone and make sure they don't fall into the wrong hands.

But right now? They're not justified as they're attacking anyone with technology.

It's both really. The Enclave doesn't allow outsiders to join them, except in rare cases, just like the Brotherhood. Also like the Brotherhood, one is born into the Enclave. By not letting people in, they keep not only their race pure, they keep their organization "perfect" as well. They work heavily in genetics as you probably know, including their own. They care just as much about their race as they do about the Enclave itself. That's what the Enclave is all about. "A perfect America", as Eden put it. The Enclave are constantly striving for perfection. :flamethrower:

By not letting people in, they keep not only their race pure, they keep their organization as well.

Keep in mind, in the Enclave's case its not really about race, at all. That's a term that doesn't really apply here. The Enclave makes no distinction between human races. In the Enclave's view, they are supporting the continuity of the human species. In this way, its about keeping their population healthy and genetically free of defect.

Anyway back on topic.

In my opinion, I agree with what Mr. Enclave said. The Brotherhood at this point has proven itself to be an organization which runs counter-productive to current progress.

Now as for exterminating them, is it justified? That depends on what you mean by the term. Is it morally right? I don't think so. But its justified in the sense if you look at it from the view of an organization which has been troubled by the Brotherhood in the past. IE. the NCR. The NCR is at war with the Brotherhood and thus a destruction of their bunker would be a part of the Brotherhood-NCR war and thus a justified military attack.

I think the Brotherhood should koin forces with the NCR. I know it will never happen and i'd be glad if it didnt but I just find the Brotherhood kind of useless and I think it'd be interesting if a group broke off to fight for a cause other then the BOS's

Then they wouldn't be the Brotherhood of Steel anymore though would they? Just BoS deserters with Power Armour, I personally would like to see some BoS "dissidents" whom leave because of differences over direction of the Brotherhood but ultiamtely still believe in it's goal.

The BoS pretend they're good but clearly just want to hoard tech, to the point they take it from the rightful owners.

The save and keep the technology from the wastelanders and idiots thing made sense at the start, to a point.
It probabely was'nt that extreme or crazy when Maxson made them.
Just soldiers trying to keep themselves and their families safe by grabbing any technology they could.
But now it's just hoarding for hoardings sake.

They're nothing more than power armoured raiders now.

No, they ar'nt justified at all. The helios one slide has them acting like raiders and thugs and bullies and nothing more.
They should die in that ending.

They're not always evil, but they're very wrong.
They're a menace to anyone with tech they want.

It's better for everyone if they are destroyed. They help no one. They are counter to progress and peoples freedom.

The Lyons BoS(FO3), they actually do something.
They help people. But they're diferent from the main.

This.
And their goal was to take advanced technology from raiders and tribals at first (those who they believed couldn't handle it) but it escalated to everybody and then their goal became obselete.

I 100% agree with this, and it's one of the better written reasons as to why the Brotherhood should die.
