DOS Box seems to be the standard, and I believe that's what was suggested when Daggerfall was released to the public.

Does that still require you to type in all of the convoluted "install drive" command-line stuff to get it to run, each time you fire it up?

I tried several times to play DF on a Win XP machine using another version of DOSBOX, but the process was tedious at best, and the mouse never handled properly. Combat in particular was all but impossible, because it refused to attack, or did so only very intermittantly (2 minutes of swinging and clicking managed to fire ONE attack attempt). It's one thing to attack and miss, which I can understand because it's based on character skill, but when you can't even swing because the interface won't work, and you die to a rat (repeatedly) after not even being able to attempt a single attack back, that's frustrating.

I vaguely recall the game from a decade ago, and it played "reasonably" (at least between crashes) on the old machine and DOS, and I at least made it well past the tutorial dungeon, so I know that it's not supposed to work that way.

the one i posted you just double click the icon on desktop and go, the install takes care of everything. really runs like a regular program but still uses a dosbox you just dont notice as much.

I use a frontend called http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/ Reloaded which allows you to have a profile for each game and change the settings with a GUI.

@Kovacius:You must have had the cpu cycles down pretty low for it to go that slow

Not sure what CPU cycles would have to do with it. The AI could attack fluidly, and my character seemed to move normally, it's just that the "attacks" didn't trigger 98% of the time. It happened randomly, as far as I can tell, doing a couple back-to-back strikes on one occasion (I finally killed the one rat and made it up the steps, after about 8-10 tries and reloads), and not doing anything at all during other fights (weapon wouldn't move, no matter what I did, while the rat gnawed my character to death).

As I said, I vaguely recall the game from over a decade ago, and there was never any weapon control issue with it then, so it has to be ane emulation problem. I'll try the SETUP_EN version at some point, but it's probably going to be quite a while before I get to it, now that Tamriel Rebuilt has released another piece of their Morrowind expansion, and until I finish what I'm currently playing.
