New players' opinion of Oblivion?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:33 am

So i'm just interested to know what any new players that maybe played Skyrim first then came back to try out Oblivion thought of it? We all know of people that played Morrowind first then went to Oblivion and how that turned out, what about people that started with Skyrim then went back a game?

Do you like Oblivion? Or is the land of Skyrim holding too much of a grip on you that you cannot enjoy the beautiful province of Cyrodiil.

Sky what?
I think it's some kind of new game thing, with flying worms.

He must be talking about the glass skywalk on the west rim of the Grand Canyon.

Now, that was an idea that just had to be built. I mean, people don't get dizzy enough just standing on the edge... ;)

I played Oblivion first almost 4 years ago, so that kinda disqualifies my opinion, since you want only new gamers to answer. But [censored] it :o, I'll answer anyways.

They're both fun, immersive, and excellent, but they are not the same game. Don't expect Oblivion to be the pre-cursor to Skyrim, each game is different (in many ways) from the other. Keep an open mind to this, and thank you.

We may have to bring that popcorn machine over to this thread now, folks.

Well, since I only played Oblivion for about 3 hours when it first came out, I'll answer.

I was disappointed. I'd forgotten what Oblivion was like until I went back to play it after playing Skyrim. I also went back after reading the PGE1. The PGE1 tells of a weirder Cyrodiil, that sounds like a cross between Venice and Japan, but more awesome. The Cyrodiil in Oblivion is just a copy-pasted medieval England, ala the less interesting parts of Middle Earth. The unique cultures of Colovia and Nibenay had gone, as had the religious cults and political conflicts of Skyrim and the are mentioned in in-game literature. Mehrunes Dagon and his followers, with the exception of the section in paradise, are also boring. I would have liked more characterisation of Dagon, seeing how interesting he is in the Fights of the Aldudagga. A lot of the side quests were very enjoyable though, a number Superior to the best of Skyrim's side quests (going into the painting comes to mind). The Thieves guild was also fantastic, (far better than Skyrim's), as was KotN and Shivering Isles. I also enjoyed being reunited with spell making again, though it was still lesser than Morrowind's spell making, that could produce hundreds of unique results. Overall I enjoy the game, and its better than most games being released today, but I feel that Skyrim (and Morrowind) are the better games.

I probably qualify as a "new Oblivion player" as I indeed started Oblivion after Skyrim, but my first TES game was Morrowind, and that is why I couldn't bring myself to play much past Imperial Prison back when Oblivion was new - the setting of Oblivion just seemed way too traumatizing to bear back then :D

Years passed, Skyrim came out, I played it, I liked it, and I decided to try Oblivion again so that I can be able to get all the easter eggs and references to Oblivion in Skyrim. So I prepared myself for what I thought would be a chore. Once out of prison, I bumped into Aleswell, and that's when I realized that I'm gonna love Oblivion. It's been months now, and I don't see myself moving back to either Skyrim or Morrowind anytime soon.

Oblivion is fantastic once you let go expectancies of TESy atmosphere. When I play Oblivion, I don't play an Elder Scrolls game - I watch and participate in a Brittish comedy, and no other game has made me laugh so much. The humour is great and has my favourite flavour, and in light with this, Oblivion's setting - the Shrek's wify Orcish ladies dressed in embroidered velvet suddenly makes sense.

Not only Oblivion has a great humour, quest lines are also great, Thieves Guild missions thrilling, lots of unique quests with unexpected twists. Also, during my first playthrough I had to take notes to keep track on character developement - just like in good old times - a game that makes you think :)

In conclusion, I played Oblivion after Skyrim, and I rate Oblivion higher than Skyrim. Skyrim has what Oblivion doesn't have - TES atmosphere, strong presence and feel of Tamrielic lore, but in many aspects Oblivion for me is better. Also, the direction Skyrim/TES series is heading looks a bit scary - just look at all the Vampires and Werevolves threads in Skyrim forum section, or is it Twilight forum, with loads of Team Edward Ulfric VS Team Jacob Tulius threads :D

I picked up Oblivion a number of months after Skyrim, my first TES. Heck, my first RPG!

I adore Oblivion, Cyrodiil and everything the game involves. I believe that Skyrim did a number of things better, but I also believe that Oblivion did a lot of things better than Skyrim. The two are, to me, closely linked, but very different games.

I love just about everything in the game. The landscape. The scenery. The Jerall Mountains. The Blades. Cloud Ruler Temple. The Imperial City. Lake Rumare. The Mage's Guild. The Arcane University. The wolves. The minotaurs. The goblins. The horses. The NPCs. The cities. The spell mechanics. The mage's robes. The quests. The fact that everything in Cyrodiil feels a lot warmer, friendlier and inviting than the cold, harsh land of Skyrim.

Even the graphics are stunning! The water, the skies, White-Gold Tower peaking up above the forest. To me, Oblivion is an absolutely amazing game. The ability for the player to immerse themselves in the gameworld and create the story of their character is absolutely phenomenal, and makes me believe that people will be playing Oblivion for many, many years to come. :tes:

I started playing Oblivion back in October because I had heard about skyrim and my parents weren't going to let me get it until Christmas. I can say that they are both good games, but are different so you can't really say one is better than the other as it is just going to be based on opinion.
