Yes. Now we're talking. That's perked things up noticeably when dragging things around. Still slower than 295 but no longer lagging things to hell. I suspect this will show significant improvement for anyone else who check into it too.

I think the ship has sailed on project forking. I for one wouldn't be very happy if I had to have 3 distinct copies of Bash installed. It took things 3 months to languish into the mess they were, I think we've all managed to turn it around much faster than that.

That's just ... that's just - damn it! seriously?

Where would those changes be hiding? If I wiped out the entire bash directory (except installers.dat and BAIN stuff) - I wonder if that would prevent that from happening - new bashed patch from scratch and all that.

What new implementations for Oblivion are happening to continue justifying this path for Oblivion's bash? It seems that there are two forks of Wrye Mash, there is Wrye Flash, etc. Skyrim and Oblivion have increasingly different needs. Why not just polish up 295.5 for what is needed for only Oblivion and call that a tentative final (or until someone picks it up again).

I don't think it is too late for that side of things (in that you have 295.5 to start work from) and then the Skyrim side would maybe be about moving forward from there after some pruning.

Sorry it is not that I have no faith in you all, but say things don't get resolved quickly - wouldn't it be good to have a stable Wrye Bash for Oblivion up?
The only thing I can do is give an error report when I get them.

Is it that 295.5 cannot be made compatible with BOSS 2.0 without getting into all ... this?

[edit] the thing is for me - I have much less patience and time than I did before with these games - I leave skyrim for a while and just want to play Oblivion and even there I'm facing issues that skyrim has caused. But I get it - it is not all about me.
I really do sympathise, because many has been the time over the past half-year when I've wanted to play Oblivion, but wasn't sure it was safe to do so because Bash was in a poor or uncertain state of stability.

However, the code required to take into account the differences between Oblivion and Skyrim is miniscule in comparison to the total volume of code in Bash. Most of Bash consists of methods of doing things. These methods have not changed, only some of the data on which they're doing things on. Having to maintain two copies of the same methods because the data differs is a headache that cannot really be justified.

The only two remaining bugs that I am aware of which were introduced with the changes for Skyrim and affect Oblivion are the UI lag and the issue with Bash resetting its own changes when lock times is enabled. They're tricky and irritating, but neither of them are game-breakers.

Forking the project would have split the developers up so that they were no longer working together, and so slowed things down (just look at Valda, who has a whole port going but no, or almost no, feedback into Bash itself). As Arthmoor has said, it's also more confusion and headaches for users.

All these issues (or their continued presence) are really just the product of misfortune. Pretty much everything that could go badly did, to a codebase that wasn't exactly easy to work with. That's what we've got to deal with though, so deal with it we shall. :shrug:

Hmm - OK guys, but say things don't get better.

I have a back up of both bash 295.5 and BOSS 1.9.1 - If I installed that older BOSS would there be issues with it being able to get masterlist and sort plugins (again just for Oblivion)?

There are items in the masterlist using syntax from BOSS 2.0 for the informational displays, so no matter how you slice it, progress will have marched on without you and your masterlist will be frozen in time.

There are items in the masterlist using syntax from BOSS 2.0 for the informational displays, so no matter how you slice it, progress will have marched on without you and your masterlist will be frozen in time.
That syntax was also supported by 1.9.x, IIRC, but I will be adding in new syntax features that will lead to incompatibility in the future.

There are, however, numerous bug fixes between the releases.

I have a back up of both bash 295.5 and BOSS 1.9.1 - If I installed that older BOSS would there be issues with it being able to get masterlist and sort plugins (again just for Oblivion)?
I'm using 295.5 with BOSS 2.0.1, they work 99% perfectly together. Install BOSS in \boss folder inside Oblivion. BOSS 2.x now uses files from \boss\oblivion subfolder, so you need to manually copy masterlist.txt and userlist from \boss\oblivion to \boss (each time thay are updated) so Bash can see them.

I'm still seeing a ~3 second lag here. :(

Hang on, getting rid of Bash's settings files in My Games\Oblivion sped it up to a ~1 second lag. It also massively cut down on the time it takes to load the Installers tab (though it did think I had it disabled). Those settings files have been around since 2009 on my laptop, across multiple mod setups, so it's probable that they had accumulated much cruft that was slowing things down.

That's what I'd call liveable now, though I'd like to see UI lag cut down some more, and I think that's definitely possible without anything too arcane (such as having changes take place in a separate thread).

@ Arthmoor: Try doing the same (though back them up), maybe it will help with your lag. I wouldn't be surprised if the lag both you and Psymon are experiencing is due to this.

So next on my list should be finding a way to selectively purge old setttings data that are just useless junk? That could be related to a way to let people who remove BAIN installed plugins without uninstalling them clear out the installer column data too.

I think the fix for the UI will be to cache more data instead of recalculating virtually everything every screen refresh. It's quite a mess in there. I'm just afraid that after another 20-30 hours of staring at that code and it might start to make sense to me.

It seems to me that it caches plenty, but half the time it is ignoring what it caches and regenerating that data, with the other 45% (random statistic) of the time being checks to see if something has changed when Bash just told something to change.

So I've been looking into the lock times issue. The refresh on window focus is basher.py line 9325. It calls bosh.py line 6296, but I don't think this has anything to do with lock times. It then calls bosh.py line 5035, which is to do with lock times.

What we want is to find out when bosh.modInfos.mtimesReset is set, because that's the condition for the basher.py refresh function letting the user know (but the actual resetting occurs before then). mtimesReset is set in bosh.py line 5095.

bosh.py line 5095 is called from inside the bosh.py line 5035 function, if FileInfos.refresh or updateBaloHeaders returns non-zero values. I don't think updateBaloHeaders has anything to do with lock times. FileInfos.refresh checks the fileInfo of the plugins as recorded in the FileInfos object against the actual file info as in the filesystem, and returns a non-zero value if they differ (it also updates the recorded data).

So it seems that bosh.fileInfos needs to be updated whenever the load order is changed by Bash.

OnDropIndexes calls bosh.modInfos.plugins.refresh(True), bosh.modInfos.refreshInfoLists. OnChar calls bosh.modInfos.swapOrder (which itself calls bosh.modInfos.plugins.refresh(True)) and bosh.modInfos.refreshInfoLists.

It looks like we want to add the bosh.fileInfos.refresh call into modInfos.refreshInfoLists, but the latter is already doing things with modification times (which is the change that fileInfos.refresh detects), so it might be better to build the fileInfos refresh into that, whatever it is.

EDIT: I just found out that in the latest SVN moving load order around using arrow keys does not trigger the reset on the latest SVN, but that drag 'n' drop does. Adding

FileInfos.refresh(self)

after line 5225 in bosh.py fixes it for drag 'n' drop too, but that's not a good solution (dnd should be doing whatever arrow keys is doing, instead).

Yes, the code is a mess because there are at least four places that Bash is tracking information about the mods. Part is in the modInfos.data (which gets updated by the FileInfos refresh call), part is in modInfos.plugins, there's modInfo.order, and then the set of stuff over in bapi.py. And they are ALL being used by various parts of the code and only somewhat in sync. It's no surprise that there are some glitches. I did my best to get the fancy stuff lojack implemented in bapi isolated since it was completely out of sync with the others, but that doesn't mean I got all of the other pieces connected back up again correctly.

Wouldn't the drag and drop case be more general than the arrow method? With drag and drop you can move files to entirely new positions in the load order. With the arrows they can only shift positions by one. Or am I missing something. I haven't really looked at that bit of the code very much.

Oh, and there are at least five places load order data is stored because the actual GUI view of things is derived from the others! It's amazing it works at all.

For some reason, ever since 297 and the subsequent SVN's, I've been having constant recurring crashes when I try to make a bashed patch. It comes up with a "pythonw.exe has stopped responding" error. Did a new Wyre Python come out or something?

I'm currently using SVN 2498 with Windows 8 x64 and Oblivion installed far, far away from my program files directory so UAC dosen't interfere with anything.

I've I've looked at your little fix in more detail and I'm pretty sure that's not right.

The FileInfos.refresh is called from within ModInfos.refresh which then also calls the refreshInfoLists. So that little fix is going to result in traversing all of the files in the Data folder twice and a number of situations.

I think that when we know the user has changed the load order (through drag and drop, arrow keys, or some other method) there just needs to be a call to

modInfos.mtimes.clear()

That will keep the refreshMTimes function from undoing the user's changes and the next refresh of the UI should recache the new values. That will be a lot less expensive than a full call to FileInfos.refresh(self).

I'm 99% sure that mtime.clear() call can be put in the Plugins.refresh() function. (Search for loadLoadOrder and refresh will be nearby.)

Not sure where you want the mtimes thing tested, is that supposed to replace the line wrinklyninja committed earlier?

@ETPC: I have no idea if the Python modules even work properly on Windows 8.

So after Auto Ghosting destroyed my Bash Tags, I decided to uninstall 295.5 and update to 297.1. Now, Bash is running horrendously slowly, as in it eats up 50% of my CPU just to do so much as move an ESP up or down in my load order. Is this an issue in program itself or did I screw up somewhere? If the latter how can I fix it? Because Bash is barely usable like this.

But then it has a section for ragdolls, and it needs me to choose between four different files which contain meshes, is there any way to choose when they don't appear in the sub-packages?

P.S. Does BAIN install .bsa files?

I didn't think it couldn't, I just had no idea if it could.
Would one way of having the files install correctly be to convert the archive to a project, simply delete the other files, leaving behind only the one I want, and then just converting it back into an archive?

P.S. When would I want to use solid compression?

Arthmoor, here are two more sets of changes. See if they make things any faster for you. (And I noticed that Trira's just solved a problem by moving some code that looked odd to me. not quite the fix I was expecting, but then I wasn't sure that it was wrong or exactly why. It's good to know my instincts aren't completely shot.)
It wasn't really the moving around that fixed it, although that did fix another potential bug (that would probably occur when renaming save files in the saves tab -- didn't test it, it's just an edumacated guess). What fixed the bug was refreshing the load order in modInfos.rename ( self.plugins.loadLoadOrder() ). getOrdered (which is used later) uses modInfos.plugins.LoadOrder, but modInfos.plugins.LoadOrder wasn't being updated with the old plugin's new name (or position in the load order). Said plugin was thus being sent to the top of the load order -- that's what caused the error. Like you mentioned in your other post, caching this information in one location (or two, one for active load order, other for full load order), would have avoided this.

By the way, did anyone but me follow that?

I've thought that several times about multiple parts of Bash.

I'm not entirely sure either. I posted that for wrinklyninja to consider and haven't tried it myself. I've been too busy doing other things to dive in and if the current method is working then it will certainly do for now.

I don't think that will work. That would just empty the recorded modification time, but Bash still needs to know what it set the mtime to, because Lock Times is for reverting changes made by other utilities.

What needs to happen is for Bash to record the new modification times after BAPI changes them when it is called for drag 'n' drop, but before anything else has a chance to change the modification times. That's why I put FileInfos.refresh in refreshInfoLists, because although modInfos.refresh calls FileInfos.refresh, modinfos.refresh is called after Bash has lost focus and then regained it, ie. after something else may have changed the modification times. FileInfos.refresh also does a bunch of other stuff that is unnecessary, but I'm not confident enough with Python to write a slimmed down function, and I don't have the time to trial-and-error one.

Problem is that bash's internal mtimes storage wasn't being updated on drag and drop, but it was for Ctrl+Arrow. This fixes it for me. I tested (albeit very briefly) with OBMM and the changes were reset. Changing load order with WB didn't cause the changes to be reset. This isn't exactly the ideal solution (imo) but it shows roughly what needs to be done. I'm kinda pressed for time at the moment so I can't look much more into it.

There's a war going on between Bash and BAPI over correct timestamps if you try using the Lock Load Order feature.

I've just found a fun little bug. The times you see in Bash aren't the real times using the recent version with the "FileInfos.refresh(self)" call.

Without that call, the situation is more amusing.

Start Bash and then modify the date on a file outside of bash. Then switch to the bash window. The time should get reset and it does, but...
Switch to another window and back to bash. You'll see the time getting reset again (possibly for lots of files this time) and the fun will continue every time you switch windows.

With the FileInfos refresh you don't get the back-and-forth in one game session, but you also aren't shown the real status of the files.

There's definitely a problem here. Interestingly the little war between Bash and BAPI doesn't happen when Bash resets the time stamps as it starts (but I think that's a bug not a feature).

I'm writing a chunk of code that will update the timestamps to match BAPI's versions because wrinklyninja is right that the Bash times have to be updated after BAPI has it's way with the files.

Interestingly the change from calling Lock Times to Lock Load Order is really more than just a name change, Bash no longer has the ability to definitively set the times to values of it's choosing (and neither does the user) because BAPI tramples all over them now. Those of us who liked to date our files manually into yearly/monthly groups, will just have to adapt.
