Skyrim Construction Set

Call me a cynic if you will, but I for one will be buying Skyrim just as soon as the CS becomes available. And not a moment before. I imagine many in this community feel the same and I very much hope Bethesda realise this. If for any reason a decision were taken to prevent modding then I would regretfully abandon the game series.

Well, what if for instance the article in Game Informer includes the developers saying that a CS will be coming out, although maybe not simultaneous with the game's release? Will you still wait, even if the developers themselves explicitly stated at some point before release that there will be a construction set? If so, that's just plain stupid.

For one, don't you want to spend some time actually PLAYING the game before either working on mods or playing the game with mods? If it'll take a month or two for Bethesda to prepare their tools for consumer use, fine. In the meantime we'll probably be having lots of fun playing the game and perhaps doing a few basic texture replacement mods if possible (if they stick with the DDS format, which I'm thinking they will unless they've developed some awesome new texture format of their own or something).

Lastly, I think the quote I recently put in my signature pretty much sums up Todd Howard's view of the modding community quite well. I seriously doubt we have anything to fear except maybe not having the official tools right away. I do hope that they actually confirm that there will for sure be a CS just to put a lid on all these posts asking if there's actually going to be one when it's already a near-certainty.

Edit: Changed my signature slightly to provide better context for the quote.

I will throw in my knickers. Todd's comments definitely point to a substantially updated version of their current tech, still using Gamebryo for rendering. Pete's "brand new engine" remark sounds like marketing speak to me, which is what you'd expect from the guy in charge of marketing after all...

+1

I think this makes the most sense as well. Furthermore I am certain they will have re-used alot of code with the new engine, fundamental things like Navmesh would likely get upgraded in the new revision.

This is my hope anyway, they can get alot more done by re-using parts of the existing code-set with all the new stuff, versus trying to re-invent the wheel on many mechanics that already work great.

"To this day, I think what the modders have done with those tools [the construction set] has helped define the series." – Todd Howard

Almost 100% sure that it will return.

The modding community is BGS's financial backbone.

The list of games with a shelf life as long as Morrowind (> 8 years) is pretty short. They are still cashing in on that game, or they wouldn't be still packaging it. And 98% of the reason for that is the modding community.

And, to re-enforce my theory, look at the success of the Nexus. The daily volume of traffic on that site is phenomenal.

BGS will continue to create sandbox environments, no doubt. To cut off the modding community would be like cutting off their own thumbs.

Thank you, BGS!

I've been a developer myself and I know logic would dictate to stick to your formulas, as long as you can...

And maybe that time is up.
