Lost an ESP (Windows 7)

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:47 am

I recently got myself a new computer, and since they no longer sell new xp computers, I had to settle with windows 7. The problem is, I've put one of my mods in the data files folder (Morrowind was installed to program files (x86), so it's there - why do I have so much crap installed on my NEW computer anyways?) So, I go there, but the ESP I placed is completely gone. I can find it in the cs, but I can't find the file to send to my beta testers. I placed it in the data files folder myself, so it should be there, and there is no Bethesda Softworks folder in the normal program files folder. If anyone knows why this happened, please let me know, thanks. :tops:

It has to do with administrator privileges.. do a start menu search for the name of your esp. I think that if you don't have the proper privileges, it puts it in My Documents.

Also, refer to this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1075481

You can solve this issue more easily by not installing Morrowind to Program Files (x86).

On Windows Vista or 7, you should not install any program to a location under Programs, Program Files, etc. if you ever intend to add, change, or remove files within the program's folder structure. Windows Vista and 7 are designed to consider all files in these folders as specially protected read-only files, because that is the way all well-designed applications are.

Only known installers and administrators are allowed to write in those folders. Any changes you make go to your Virtual Store, which will be something like C:\Users\(my name)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\... Of course Morrowind will be unable to find those files in your Virtual Store.

As described in the other threads, you can solve this by enabling "Compatibility Files" so that you can find the files in your Virtual Store, cut them from there, and then as Administrator, paste them into the real Morrowind\Data Files folder.

You will also run into similar problems if you ever update or delete any of these files.
