Why so much secretivism with Skyrim

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2010 9:38 am

I know keeping a tight lip on the making of a game is very typical but considering the history of Bethesda with the ES franchise I wonder why they kept Skyrim so top secret. I'm actually very happy because it could be that there's something really different, something "special" that they have in store for us. Maybe is that new engine they are talking about. What do you think it could be?

That's Hype Up 101 in the entertainement industry. They want the fans to start a flood of rumors so that they can gauge people's interest in TES games. They are still secretive now because they probably got a deal with Game Informer to not disclose more information until people buy the magazine. I wonder how much Beth got paid for that!

Because in actuality the game isn't even being made...I know someone who knows someone...so...yeah, I'm what you would call "in the know"...

I think it is a positive thing, I am a very patient person, so that interview / preview could happen in 3 months and I could not care less.
In the end, it is always na effective marketing tool, disclosing little by little, etc...

Since it's being released within the year I imagine that'll make mroe of a flood of information as opposed to a trickle over the course of two years. I imagine that more information in a shorter time span tends to get people a bit more excited.

Bethesda is always like this. I like it. It gives them a chance to do what they want without us bugging them.

Secretivism? I assume you mean Secretion?

I don't think he does. Secretion is something different and much grosser.

It probably bugs me more than it should that they're being so tight lipped because of some deal they made with Game Informer. It just seems really petty to me. It's something I'd expect from EA, not Bethesda. But I guess if it helps increase the development budget then it's okay.

they did this with oblivion. most companies do this with very very big releases right after announcement.

Oh those early April Fools jokes, reminds me of Coolboyman pulling a several-month-long and rather cruelly well made April Fools joke with Rare on the whole Stop N Swop community.

No but seriously, April Fools.

yes, that word is better and the word I should have used. Luckily though, "secretivism" is actually a word and strangely that word was the only word I could think of right off the bat.

I think the reason for the tight lips are 3 fold

First to make deals to entertainment companies for information leaks after the comerail success of oblivion
second to make people speculate and hype up the game putting in preorders
Third [hoping] The Infernal City is before the game, revamping the world of the elderscrolls. This will be a real game changer

I know some folks are saying that this is nothing but hype 101. But Morrowind and Oblivion had the same hype too. What makes Skyrim so special? This is the first time an ES title will be release after a year it was announced. Oblivion had the longest announcement. I remember I still hadn't beaten Morrowind when Beth announced the development of Oblivion.

I thought they'd already explained this. They just wanted to wait until they had a ton of content to show everybody. They don't want to do a bunch of info over a long period of time, but rather a big bang of info. I think it's going to be mind-blowing personally.

Also, I think it helps that the game will be so far along that many changes won't be made once they start giving out info, y'know trying not to repeat the mistakes they had with Oblivion.

Plus on one last note they probably have an agreement with game informer that they get to be the first source of Skyrim info.

Its not really much of a secret I mean we didn't find out everything about New Vegas when the 1st trailer for it was released. When the GI mag comes out in the next 9 to 16 days we will find out some basic info that will keep us occupied for either a month or an hour.

Beth and ZeniMax are doing amazingly now. They probably have a much larger team of marketers working on this game than ever before. Maybe it’s just because it’s a good idea for marketing and they have every month from now till launch planed out.
