Migrating Modded Oblivion install to Windows 7

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 8:46 pm

I haven't had access to my gaming desktop for about a year. My install of Oblivion was pretty heavily modded, but I don't really remember what I have installed. I want to migrate to Windows 7 64-bit from Windows XP 32-bit. Is it possible or likely that there's anything I need to reinstall or copy besides the following? Additionally, should my modded installation work without any further tweaking, or is it likely that some mods are, I don't know, somehow incompatible?

C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion
C:\User\My Games\Oblivion
C:\Users\Appdata\Common\Oblivion

Back up those locations (actually, the Appdata one you probably don't need to)

Once you have installed 7, reinstall Oblivion (but DO NOT install it into Program files! Put it into a different directory, like "C:\Games" or something)

Copy the backed up data from the first two into the newly created equivalents.

You should be good to go.

Never mind. I had one issue in mind, but the advice above actually does take care of it.

Realistically - you just need your Oblivion install folder, "Bethesda Softwords/Oblivion" - the user/ folder has your saves and ini files - mine are in name/Documents/My Games I think.

Basically, back up your saves and install folder, then once your new OS is in just install Oblivion fresh and copy them over.

That SHOULD work.

It defintely works, I did the same thing when I had to rebuild my computer a month and a half ago.
