Do I have a corrupt save, again?

So, as of today, I've been getting a lot of recurring crashes with Oblivion, where if I fast travel anywhere or wait anywhere, I get a CTD. I had a problem with this before a few characters back (both of which lost to the same problem :( ) and was really hoping this might just be a fluke instead of a visit back to the horrid tutorial dungeon.

It should be worth noting that I was getting a similar issue when I was playing through The Ayleid Steps, but that was fixed by removing the mod. I tried the same with KDQ, which is the same mod I'm playing through right now but the crashes are still very much there.

When you lost both of your previous characters, were you using the same load order (minus The Ayleid Steps)?
Some initial thoughts:
  • Does the crashing happen consistently at one, or a few, locations, or is it sporadic?
  • Have you cleaned all your mods (except the Bashed Patch, of course!) with TES4Edit?
  • Is it possible the crashing always starts once your character hits a certain level? If so, it's possible some of your mods have corrupt leveled creature spawn points (a frequent cause of crashing) and/or conflicting spawns.
  • Have you tried temporarily disabling 10 or 20 mods at a time, then rebuilding your Bashed Patch, to see if you can isolate the problematic one(s)? If the crashing suddenly stops then you know at least one of the mods in the batch you just disabled is causing a problem.
  • Have you created custom BSA files? If so, be careful about creating multiple BSA files that contain the same meshes, textures, etc. That can also cause crashes.
Honestly I can't think of a reason why waiting would cause a crash, but any of these could explain a Fast Travel crash.

the only time I've had a crash on waiting was when using NPCs with jobs years ago, conflicting AI schedules can crash the game at a certain time of the day ( reproducible )

-Yeah, when I had my previous characters it was nearly the same load order, minus some quest mods replaced here and there.

-The crashing occurs anywhere.

-All my mods are cleaned as far as BOSS tells me they need to be cleaned.

-Right now, my character is level 38, but I couldn't tell you what my previous characters were when I lost them.

- That's a thought, but the problem becomes when I have 300 mods it becomes time-consuming. I might just toggle off all the mods except for the DLC and UOP's and see if that works.

- Nah, no custom BSA's. I haven't found a need for them.

unfortunately BOSS doesn't know everything.

at the very least run undelete and disable on ALL your mods, there is NEVER a good reason for a deleted record and there is NO way doing that can cause any issue.

while you're doing this, you could tick the "display CRCs" in BOSS GUI, and report in the BOSS thread the CRC of the dirty mods BEFORE you clean them ( BOSS needs the dirty CRC so that it can warn you about it. the clean one is useless as then there's nothing to warn you about )

that way you'll also help the whole community by expanding the list of known dirty mods ( 99% of the mods are dirty to some extent... )

Ok, well this is wonderful.

So, I decided to load up a old save game with KDQ not loaded and it was working fine! I could fast travel and wait places and all that stuff. However, now it crashes whenever it hits midnight. And I can't skip or wait past midnight. Any ideas?

Also, I tried loading nothing but Oblivion.esm and my saved games don't load at all.

This is looking more and more dire by the minute :(

I can feel your pain. I was too a victim of overmodded bloated oblivion and lost a char in similar way - crash on wait/sleep. I was installing every mod that looked cute and important which I could get my dirty hands on :smile:

After that I just asked myself a question - do I really need all those 200+ mods to enjoy the game? What are the absolutely essentials mods I can't play without?
OBGE? MiniMap? DynamicMap? Extra mods/clothes/weapons? Extra hotkeys? Swamp Grass? Rainbows? Big cities? Large overhauls? Random NPC that I don't care about? Gigabytes of textures in Data folder? What is more important - just play and immerse myself into Tamriel, or praying every time I press wait button or change cell that the game won't crash, that my last save wont get corrupted?

After that I ditched half of my previous load order and just focused on immersive quest mods. So far so good - the game feels lightweight, loads fast, quite stable, all saves are working, almost no glitches and I finally enjoy exploring Tamriel... the same good old feeling I had in 2006.

p.s. Still not as good as 1996 with Daggerfall, but thats another story :blush:

Ok, well this is wonderful.

So, I decided to load up a old save game with KDQ not loaded and it was working fine! I could fast travel and wait places and all that stuff. However, now it crashes whenever it hits midnight. And I can't skip or wait past midnight. Any ideas?

Also, I tried loading nothing but Oblivion.esm and my saved games don't load at all.

This is looking more and more dire by the minute :(

I had the same issue. It turned out to be Ren's Guard Overhaul was conflicting somehow so I removed it and have had no problems.

Hmm, should've guessed it was Ren's...I've had trouble with it too. And that's despite the fact that the author has done quite a bit of work to try and ensure compatibility with other mods.

Honestly, I don't even know what it does. I just install mods that are recommended to me from guides and NEVER stray from the beaten path. That way lies madness. And sixlivion *shudder*.

Thats a really good way to have no idea what is going on in your game. Which leads to situations like this.
