Fallout 3 Numbers Station

Hello. I'd like to share with you a tale that my late friend, Steven Macintosh told me, shortly before he "accidently" fell from an office window after leaning on it. Someone had "forgotten" to lock before leaving, the official report said. The version that he told me was not actually a story, but an excited babble about future predictions, conspiracies, "how all the pieces fit together" and such. He may have added more detail, but it just so happens that he left his circuit box open during the night, and also happened to have left a pair of wire cutters left there, and some hoodlums had decided to cut the phone wire. You may be wondering why they had only cut the phone wire, and not the myriad of others, or why the people who did this would be able to see the circuit box, let alone climb over four consecutive fences and two hedgerows, but I've learned to stop asking questions about that subject. Some things are better left untouched. I have managed to condense his rambling into a tale. You see, Fallout 3 contains several in-game radio stations. The most important station is Galaxy News Radio. Most players who take the evil route in the game know that you can kill Three Dog, and he will be replaced by a technician named Margaret. She is a slightly enigmatic character, with not much to say on the radio, and you never see her in game, which means you can never kill her. When Three Dog is killed, you are stuck with Margaret. Forever.

Right?

What most players do not know is that, under certain cirumstances, GNR will become a numbers station. How? Well, firstly, destroying Raven Rock is a must, as I have tried several times to do this, and no matter what I tried, it only worked when I did that. Also, you have to not boost the radio signal, and skip over the Galaxy News Radio quest. If you have done it correctly, you will see "radio station lost" and then, a few seconds later "radio station found". Don't worry, you can still hear it without boosting the signal, becuase the top areas of the highest mountain range on Raven Rock is high enough to catch the signal. But what, you may ask, is a numbers station? Well, they are most commonly found in Russia. An example is the Dead Hand network. It was built during the Cold War and it uses a very simple mechanism. It broadcasts random numbers being read by a voice. When the voice broadcasts a certain string of letters, it was to mean "The Soviet Army has been defeated, the enemies have taken the capital, and the country is a warzone. Nuclear bombs will now be launched at major enemy positions in *insert timeframe here*. If you are near these areas, quickly disperse, or you will be killed." However, this numbers station is not used for that purpose. In fact, it's purpose is unknown. What IS known, however, is that there is a string of morse code after every string of numbers read. I know morse code, and quickly deciphered it. It is not gibberish, but rather actual messages. Most of them are mundane, such as "Having Chinese for dinner, those noodles are great" or even comical, such as "Did you see that video I uploaded on Youtube today? It's me going around Toronto tying tripwires around everything." I thought these were simple easter eggs.

I was wrong.

The strange parts are that the person who reads the messages is Three Dog. Actually, it's technically not him, but his voice actor, Erik Dellums. He reads the letters in a depressed, monotone manner. He never uses double digits, except the numbers 12, 11, and 10. Also, when he is finished reciting the numbers, the song "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire" plays. When it is finished, he recites the numbers again, the morse code plays again, the song plays again, and so on in that fashion. All the music tracks are disabled on the station.

And the messages aren't just simple messages. Most of them are normal, but some of them chill me to the bone.

"The Queen has died today. The world mourns. On this day, we are all Brits."

"I can't believe the've actually done it. I told them to stop, but they just kept pushing the boundaries. It was small, but then it was larger, and it was making that noise. That horrible noise. I can't take that noise anymore. I'm not going to patiently wait for death to take me. I have a pistol in the attic."

"I can see the light from outside. It's been getting brighter since yesterday. I wish it hadn't. I can see those things crawling around outside, moaning and gurgling. They took Johnson yesterday. They smashed down the wall and took his body out of the attic. They were shrieking in that horrible way, their cries muffled by the bloody tentacles protruding from their mouth. I can still hear the pointed spikes that support them dragging around on the ground. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard. They've been pounding at my front door for a while now, standing up on their hind legs and slashing at it with their long arms and...laughing, in a horrible, bloodcurdling way. The noise. I can't take that laughing noise anymore. It tears at my mind. I think they have some kind of thing in their brain. When they make that noise, I feel like I have to go over to them, to open the door and let them tear me apart."

Just recently, I have discovered something stranger. Some of the messages seem to...predict the future somehow. I don't know how, but I don't want to read anymore. I fear that I may hear one that predicts my death.

"What you talkin' bout? You will be missed"

"Huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Many dead, animals trapped. BP tanker exploded."

Strangely, though these were from the future, some were from the past.

"He's dead, and blame will probably be placed on that actor, Booth. Johnson better not cheat me out of my payment."

Recently, I have figured out dates and times for these:

I am relocating to a secure area. They will not find me where I am going. I will post updates, and post normally on these forums, but if there is ever an event where I have not posted updates, or posted normally, assume that they have found me. Change your IP adress and logout. The next time you log in, select to browse anonymously. That will be enough to fool the undercover watchers. If I have not posted any updates regarding this matter, but have posted normally, that is not me. They have found me and forced my password out of me and are now using my account to look for information and to find witnesses. If I contact you while in this manner, reply with this: I know who you are, I know what you are here to do, and I am not giving you any information."

It may also be of note that the latest messages are at 2027.
