Elderscrolls 3, 4, 5- Which has best modslongevity

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 9:44 am

I posted a similar thread in the Oblivion general discussion, but thought I might get more responses here.

I've been a fan of the elder scrolls series since morrowind was released, but due to never having a computer worth a dang always played them on console only.

Well time's have changed, and I recently purchased a very nice high end gaming desktop. I want to mod the heck out of the Elder scrolls since i've always wanted to. I'd like the communities opinion on which one would be the most worthwhile to mod

Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim.

I own all 3 on xbox, and have played the heck out of the vanilla versions. The only thing keeping me back from just going out and picking up another copy of skyrim is the fact that it's still 60 bucks, but if it has great mods and is worth it i see no reason why i couldn't. so throw in your two cents and help me make up my mind which one to buy.

I love each game, and mods would give me a great reason to go back to the older ones and re-experience them. At the same time Skyrim has me really addicted playing the dawngaurd beta, and I would also love to mod that on my new PC

Here's my thoughts

Skyrim excites me because I would be able to take advantage of the expensive graphics card I purchased and push it to max settings and download/create some really beautiful mods. - again major thing holding me back is the fact it's still 60 dollars and i've already bought it once

Oblivion was and still is one of my favorite games and being able to download and create a few mods for it would definetly give me an excellent reason to dive back into it. major advantage is a ton of readily available quality mods and i can buy the digital deluxe version with all offical DLC for only 25 dollars

And then morrowind. My first foray into elder scrolls. Love the game. The best reason about getting it would be the fact there's still so much in the game i haven't done yet. now that i could get some great mods for i'd be able to get around alot of the things that have been holding me back from getting back into it, and improve the textures and make it beautiful.

So really i can think of great reasons to mod any of them. Which is why i'm here and don't know which one to dive into.

Oblivion has one of the best modding communities in PC gaming in my opinion.

I hear the Morrowind modding community is pretty great also, although I haven't tried out many mods myself (probably because the vanilla game is so good as it is). All i've really tried are a handful of visual mods, which can make the game look pretty incredible for a 2002 game.

As for Skyrim, I would imagine it'll be a few years before it can compete with Oblivion and Morrowind on the modding front. There are a few good ones already, but personally i'm leaving it a while before trying any... so I get a completely overhauled experience.

Yes, I've heard great things about the modding communinities for each game of the series. I also plan on doing some minor modding myself, create a customer built castle off in the wilderness, with some custom armours and weapons. Is there a mod for increasing draw distance Oblivion. I find setting a castle on the edge of a cliff overlooking mountains and mist for miles appealing and as far as I know skyrim is the only one with terrain and draw distance like that.

oblivion did have some interesting mods i liked the HUD mods to make the bars become globes for health and what not.
morrowind does have some big mods though. tamriel rebuilt is a huge one that makes the whole province of morrowind, the overhual mods look good but i like the vanilla graphics best.

i agree skyriom is going to have some time before it can compete with either oblivion or morrowind on mod selection.
oblivion does have morroblivion. but overall i would say morrowind has the bigger selection of mods as it was just out longer.
either way you should try visiting the mod forums for both of the games. people will gladly show you the best of whats been made so far. i know morrowind mod forums have a few people that are dedicated to getting new modders and player set up and are pretty happy to even trouble shoot with you for days.

Both the Morrowind and (especially) the Oblivion modding communities are amazing. Borderline genius. The Oblivion guys not only saved the game from its broken vanilla state, but made it into arguably one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It blows my mind to just think about it.

You really should just stay/lurk in the modding forums, that's where most of them stay. Try this for starters: http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/07/16/ten-essential-oblivion-mods/

My vote is Oblivion.

I enjoyed Morrowind a lot and couldn't STAND Oblivion's level scaling. As soon as I figured out how deep it went (after a couple hours of play) my desire to play it felt surgically removed. I put it on a shelf and forgot about it for two years.

Then took it back down, installed OOO, made my own adjustments.. and I've been playing it at least 2,500 hours. Much more than Morrowind.

Haven't tried Skyrim yet. Have no desire to. It will need at least as many/deep mods as Oblivion to be playable for me and it's just not old enough to have that yet.

The only PC version ive had is Morrowind and i had a lot of fun in the modding community in that one, Although bugs are very frequent to happen unless you have a REALLY good computer. But i think Skyrim has the best mods now a days.

well I ordered the oblivion 5th anniversary edition. Wanted to make sure it was a hard copy because I read that download versions such as steam can have problems with modding. Decided to wait for a GOTY edition of skyrim before forking out for that game.

For quest mods, Morrowind is best.
For content mods, Oblivion is best.
For gameplay mods, Skyrim is best.

Tough one.

Morrowind has a lot of great mods out there. But so does Oblivion. Skyrim will probably make it there eventually too.

Morrowind has a daunting collection of mods spanning a decade now, and trying to figure out what you want out of your own game can be as complex and frustrating, yet ultimately rewarding, as the game itself. The Tamriel Rebuilt team has just released the third section of the entire mainland (almost half done!), with a level of quality and content which blend almost seamlessly with the original game (if anything, it's better than vanilla). There are still new mods being released, and two popular "favorites" have just been updated: Necessities of Morrowind (which adds food, drink, and sleep requirements for a whole different "semi-hardcoe" experience); and Morrowind Comes Alive (which adds numerous additional NPCs, friendly and otherwise, and many new items to the game). There is a recent Graphics Overhaul compilation that makes it easier than ever to get started with a modded and mostly "modern looking" game, although the old animations are still stiff and awkward.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO) rebalances the game "Oblivion" and adds a host of NPCs and creatures which are not bound by the horrendously excessive scaling of the vanilla game. MMM does many of the same things, along with an embedded crafting system that I found even more enjoyable than the main premise of the mod (I don't know if it's possible to use MMM's crafting with OOO). Between them, it made what I considered to be a pointless "rat race" into a somewhat enjoyable game, although the "broken" aspects were still unmistakable there beneath the added content, and I still got really bored with it.

Skyrim's modding community is REALLY being limited by all the game-breaking bugs. Oblivion and Morrowind's modding communities are still very strong even today.

Tamriel Rebuilt's been updated? Awesome.

I'm pretty sure Oblivion have the best modding-community. Sadly I've never been able to enjoy their mods myself, as I played Oblivion on console.
I'm still tempted to buy Oblivion on PC just to mod the hell out of it.

Morrowind has a gargantuan collection of mods despite the modding scene there despite being just barely alive. I never got the sense that Oblivion had as large a mod collection, but it's still got a fairly active community although at this point it's seems pretty focused on turning it into a porm simulator. Way to early to say about Skyrim.

As for which has the best longevity? At this point I'd have to say Morrowind if you can get into it (I understand it's difficult for some people), there's just so much in the base game, on top of countless mods. Then there's the Tamriel Rebuilt and the Province: Cyrodiil projects which both adds a metric [censored]ton of new content that fits rather seamless into the game. I'm still playing Morrowind daily.

I have to say that Oblivion's mods added most, largely because Nehrim was so brilliant. It's probably my favorite mod of all time and one of my favorite RPGs.
