I'm a soon to be Oblivion PC player!(hopefully)

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 2:53 am

Well, if I can sort out my computer, I'll be playing Oblivion(I got it given to me) So I was wondering, are there any mods or console commands that I should know from the start? This is my first dip into PC gaming, so I'm a little naive, but hey what better place to start than an old time favourite?:)

Welcome to Cyrodiil! :)

My one-stop-shop for Mods is the Oblivion Nexus:
http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/
You can spend hours searching there, and it has everything you need!

As for gameplay ... Start with a 'vanilla' game, with no mods. Learn the lay of the land, take your time, and then once you know what you're doing, bring some mods into it.

Good luck, and enjoy! I hope you love Oblivion as much as the folk here do! :)

You might want to play for a bit without any mods, just to get a feel for the game and see exactly what you want mods for. Or if you already are very clear about what kinds of things you want modded in the game, it might help to ask exactly for what you need. Asking generically for mods seldom helps much, since there are over 20,000 Oblivion mods on TES Nexus alone, aiming in all sorts of directions--and no two people want the same things in the game.

I agree with the above advice. I recommend playing vanilla and identify things you want to change. Then seek mods to change what needs it. I have quite a few mods that relate to how my character looks for example, and a good number more to support her precious horse. I'm perfectly fine however with vanilla graphics for scenery and the vanilla leveling system. So each player's requirements are different. Most of us would certainly recommend the Unofficial Oblivion Patch (UOP) - it doesn't really change anything, simply fixes a myriad of small errors that Bethesda overlooked before they moved on.

Regarding the command console, it is a wonderful and powerful tool that can improve many things and fix other things. Here is a good link to the UESP wiki tutorial: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Console_Command_Tutorial

You may also want to make some ini tweaks such as enabling the command console and enabling screenshots. Later, you may want to consider tweaking the ini to eliminate the borders to other provinces and/or change the timescale of the game.

nothing i would recommend from the start...except maybe the unofficial oblivion patch. it's been a while since ive played so i can't say if the patch is easy to install or not but if someone else says it is easy then i'd recommend it since it fixes bugs without really changing anything if i remember correctly. if it's hard to install you might just be better off playing a while

the unofficial oblivion patch.
This is essential, and it's easy to install and use.

There's an unofficial Shivering Isle patch too, if you have that expansion.

I agree with what has already been said. Especialy with getting the unofficial patch. You may also want to hang out in the mod forum. There are a lot of great people who will help you get your mods up and running. Keep in mind, if you do start installing a lot of mods, you will need some type of mod manager to keep track of the load order. But, they are very easy to use.
