I am still unable to apply the official patch and its beginning to drive me insane. I've uninstalled and reinstalled countless times and the patch progress constantly stops at 8% and on oblivion.exe. I've ensured its read only is unchecked and before reinstalling I removed every trace of oblivion from the system. Under LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE in the registry there was an entry called oblivion/knights of the nine (from when I had the GOTY edition) so I was confident deleting this would solve it but it hasn't. There were also 4 entries under Local Machine/Users in the registry called oblivion.exe but removing these still has not solved it.
I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm dropping the patch in to the Oblivion folder where the oblivion.exe is located before I try to install. I'm in the UK and the game manual has an English contact address so I assume its the oblivion_v1.2.0416UK patch I need but I'm also trying the oblivion_v1.2.0416English and both patches give the same result which is on 8% it stops with the "Old file not found...." and with Oblivion.exe as the file it stops on. I can't understand why it fails to recognise the oblivion.exe when I've just installed it. I've removed all save files and there are a few references to Oblivion in the registry but nothing referencing oblivion.exe. There is an entry called backdoor.oblivion in the registy shared docs folder which I've left alone incase it causes problems.
I was able to live without patching it before and completed the game but now I'm replaying with mods and some require the latest OBSE so I need to get it patched. I was also getting close to throwing my monitor through the window because every chest contained either just two potions or between 40 - 50 gold. Even Boss chests were inimpressive. I might need to resign myself to getting the pre-patched GOTY edition but working in IT I hate being beaten by a patch lol.
Are there any reports I could run to identify what is causing this? Can I extract information from the patch installer to identify whats causing the error? I've scoured topics relating to this and removed all known traces of Oblivion from my PC and searced for oblivion.exe in the registry and removed all traces of them. I have files with oblivion in the name such as web files but I'm sure they won't affect it. I'm installing to the default C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion but I've also tried installing to a custom folder on the D drive.
To reiterate the patch stops at 8% regardless of which patch I try and always on oblivion.exe. I tried changing oblivion.exe to oblivion.old after reading this might solve it but then I get the error 'File not found'. This shows its definately finding the oblivion.exe I've just installed so why isn't it the correct one?
As I posted previously I had the GOTY and locoated the oblivion/knights of the nine in the registry and removed it. I only had the unofficial patch and decorator assistant during that time but with my new copy I've been running a few more mods such as the Mannaquin and Gabrielle Renee. I've read mods can cause this error but I assume only when they are installed in the oblivion/data folder so if I uninstall (I never have problems with the uninstaller) I assume all traces of mods are removed.
Just when I think I've located and deleted something that I think is causing the problem I get the same errror. Everytime I run the patch for the first time after making some changes it installs for about 5 minutes until it gets to oblivion.exe at 8% and abruptly stops. I can hear the hard disk spinning then suddenly stop at this point. Then after that if I try the patch (no point I know) within 30 seconds it stops at the same point. If no update has been made why doesn't it take 5 minutes to get to that point every time?
Sorry for the War and Peace post and repeating myself but I'm at work and also trying to cover all angles.
Does anyone know the processes involved when installing the patch and what it searces for and where? Whats most frustrating is other than the file it stops on the patch gives no indication of how to resolve the error.
Any advice to rectify this will be gratefully recieved.
cheers,
Jamie
