Any tips before I start Old World Blues?

Post » Wed Jul 04, 2012 3:59 am

Well, I'm fixing to take the plunge into OWB and just thought I'd ask if you have any tips for me before I start. I don't know if it's like some dlcs that let you take your own gear, or do you pick it all up when you're there. Also points of interest would be nice. And finally "general" advice about this particular dlc from a broad perspective.

Thanks, G

PS: I've heard this Add On is very popular and fun.

-You will be able to take your own gear, so don't worry about it. In fact, you're going to get some nice bonuses when you start the DLC.
-The enemies are bullet sponges. Unless you are on Very Easy, it takes a lot of ammo to kill the enemies. Robotics Expert and Animal Friend (2) make the DLC a joke, though. If you use guns, I suggest AP rounds. You are going to encounter a lot of robots and animals.
Spoiler
The SINK (starting area/building in OWB) is one of the coolest player homes and is the best place to store gear when you begin.
-Have fun! I really enjoyed the DLC, even though a few of the forum members dislike it.

Thanks Gingy, I'm looking forward to it! I don't have Robotics Expert or Animal Friend so that's that. I'll stock up on AP rounds plus I have a Pulse Gun, Holorifle, and the Q-35 matter modulator so I've got energy weapons covered. I've also got pretty much all the standard rifle/pistol weapons. So just lot's of ammo...I'll go get that post haste! ;)

Lots of ammo. Oh and hopefully you have the jury rigging perk. Armor gets destroyed easily. Or you could have like ten thousand caps for that. If you have JR perk then bring pieces of armor to repair your current armor. Light armor is pretty easy to obtain so you won't need anything for that. Medium is a lot tougher in that dlc but there are plenty of combat armors in there to repair any medium armor. Heavy armor? Good luck. Hope you have caps.

Other than that just remember to make a save outside of the DLC. You can't go back to the Mojave until you finish OWB.

- Take all the equopment you need. Stim packs and ammo are the best.
- You'll get some decent bonuses when starting the DLC.
- Install all the upgrades in the SINK, that way you'll have a pretty decent home base.
- EMP weapons such as the Pulse Gun or Paldain Toaster should be taken with you to deal with all the robots.

Bring truckloads of ammo.

Also just as a warning, the DLC start with a 40 minute conversation (literally). The first conversation you have will be unbelievably long, so be prepared for it. Might as well start a timer, bring something to drink and relax.

If you can't bring enough ammo, then consider investing some points into your Melee weapons skills; proton axes are pretty powerful and are especially effective against the myriad of robotic enemies you'll be facing.

Early on, you'll get an energy weapon called a Sonic Emitter, and as you proceed through the DLC, you'll acquire various modules for it that alter its functionality. Get the right ones, and it can be a fairly effective weapon, even if you're unskilled with Energy Weapons.

After completing the main quest in OWBs, you can return to it anytime and do whatever you may have missed. So if you feel like you're running out of supplies, by all means, just finish it. You may not get as nice an ending that way, but eh, whatever.

Like Dead Money, you're going to be stuck in the DLC until you beat the main quest. So for the love of House, make a backup save before touching that satellite, just in case.

You'll also find that there can be a LOT of dialogue to go through when you're dealing with the Think Tank.....

First topic is true but second is only semi true: the conversation WILL be very huge but drinking while talking to anyone who lives in the think tank is the worst idea ever because those things are [censored]ing hilarious!

Grab a Proton Axe to deal with the mechanical enemies. Even if I'm playing a character that doesn't use melee weapons, that thing is good enough to kill the robots that swarm you and conserve your ammo. I think I had a melee skill of 31 and it was still effective to use. Jury rigging skill helps with repairs while you're there too.

Grab mugs and toasters to take with you. If you were able to take any of the gold bars from SM this is a great place to sell them as your "Store" has one of the highest cap counts and restocks every few days.

You are going to get hurt a lot so take a bushel or three of stimpaks. There aren't that many to pick up once there and not enough ingredients to make many of them. Don't be surprised if you get crippled limbs frequently either. If you are playing hardcoe (doesn't everyone? ) be sure to pack doctor bags and hydra...

Someone else already said it but the Protonic axe is by far the most useful weapon in OWB....imo

Along with the truckloads of ammo advice, and a moderate amount of melee skill advice, i'd say it will help to learn to appreciate some blues and jazz, and make a note to yourself to look up at the night sky once in awhile when you're exploring the crater and listening to the music. To me that was the most memorable thing about the dlc, exploring the crater at night with the music playing and the stars overhead blazing.
