Might be a fail on my part but how, if possible, do you go about getting your gear that was stripped at the beginning of dead money?

It's automatically placed back in your inventory when you when return to the Mojave

You can use the footlockers inside the abandoned BOS place to insert most of your gear. And then just make a couple of fast travels to your house or the sink to store some of these things.
