Fantastic, thanks for posting that. I did love Oblivion, but that one aspect was what it truly lacked above all else. This makes me feel optimistic that Skyrim won't just be a good game, but perhaps a truly great one! :)

The more I hear about this Skyrim, the more I like it.

So they are gradually returning back toward Morrowind standards. Great!

Hope "A more unique sense of culture" is accompanied with "A more unique sense of architecture", "more unique landscapes", "more unique dungeons", and "more unique NPCs and monsters".

OK, I like to day dream. :)

Things like culture are not something modders would be able to add to the game easily, so it would be nice if Bethesda did. :P

This is good news indeed. Now with this we know that Skyrim is going to have its own 'feel' at best.

This is good to know. I think the overall tone of the teaser video also suggests a strong emphasis on a 'unique culture', with its dark, menacing theme and apparent use of symbolism. I hope the general tone of the game reflects this. A feeling that life is a fragile thing, prey to the hostile forces of a dangerous landscape and unpredictable, implacable gods.

I've checked out the recommended reading list about Skyrim, and it's obvious that the game designers have plenty of great lore to work with to build the sense of culture.

Everything is looking good so far.

Yep, Morrowind did have a greater sense of culture. I remember being blown away the first time I got to the side of Vvardenfell that had the those Mage towers.

I hope the ability to fly comes back as well. Hell they even do it in the Elder Scrolls novel that came out last year.

Ah yes, I remember this Pod Cast when it was posted in the speculation threads. I remember thinking, OMG it's got to be TES.

sorry haha its hard not to nostalgia every time i see the words "ah yes" all i here is ^

I hope with more culture some unique npc's like the guy in the census and excise office with dialog meant only for them in a voice that is fitting.

more unique culture needs to also mean more unique voice acting

so at the time, Skyrim likely wasn't far enough in development to already have this implemented, but it seems reasonable to assume that since that time the team has added worked in the "more unique sense of culture" Todd was thinking of.

well according to this the "design" for skyrim started right after Oblivion, also on how many new people are working on it since fallout came out, alot more info mid-january is coming,

It's so sad to think that Cyrodiil could have had that unique culture..

Ancestor Moth Monks actually being covered in moths... Nibenian Cults/Customs... Colovian Hardiness and Simplicity in Style/Dress... Tree Canopy Tunnels... A River-Based Travel system...

*sigh*

I can just picture a Nibenian and a Colovian family fighting and you having to solve the dispute and show that they aren't so different when it all boils down to it.

Hopefully in Skyrim we'll get some of the good stuff when it comes to that.

Very intriguing ideas indeed here. The depth of politics and faction interaction in Morrowind is one of the things that has kept me playing it ten years later. I sorely missed that in Oblivion, and haven't touched that game since a year after it was released. A good RPG definitely needs far more than just character development and one-on-one interaction. Even FO3 lacked this to a very large degree; the faction interactions were few and far between...though what there was had the feel of being implemented well.

This also almost lays another fear of mine to rest: a Bloodmoon rehash. Solstheim had nothing but a few groups of Nords, the EE Company, and a lot of wilderness. Yet one of the joys of Morrowind as a whole was the cities; the size and amount of interaction with diverse cultures all around the island. I've been afraid that Skyrim would have nothing but Nords and they would be clones of what we saw in Skaal, with a few others intermixed here and there. I've been digging into the lore a bit recently, and Skyrim is supposed to be home to quite a seat of power, the place of origin of a conquering people. And typically when a group of people conquer or repeatedly battle others, they absorb much of that culture. So perhaps we'll see some bits remaining of the culture of the Chimer intermixed with Nord culture.

Yeah,

This is awesome news. That was something Oblivion was really lacking, the sense of culture and place. Great to hear they are aware of that.

When you consider that every line has to be voice acted, nothing will be easy for modders to add, culture seems an impossible task.

Now you have done it.

I think I have to reinstall Morrowind again. :glare:

I hope they make it abit like.. say.. the dwarven society in Dragon Age!

Lots of hierarchies, blood, revenge, loyalty, honour, betrayal, inequality, traditions, oaths, grugdes. It could make for a very interesting society, with lots of opportunities for spectacular political intrigues and storylines. It would also make it feel more authentic than a simple norse-ripoff.
