New ASUS laptop - Can I run Fallout 3?

Post » Tue Feb 16, 2010 7:19 am

Alright guys, I've never played Fallout 3 firsthand (although it would really like to) thus the ability of a potential laptop to run this game is a large selling point.
I need you guys (who've possibly had firsthand experience running fallout on a similar machine) to tell me if these specs will get the job done... and what kinda quality I can expect.

ASUS K52DR-X1
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
CPU - AMD Phenom II Triple-Core N830 (2.1 Ghz (x3 for each of the cores = 6.3 Ghz))
RAM - 4 gigs DDR3
GPU - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (1 gig dedicated DDR3 VRAM)

Well? :)

I currently run FO3 on a Dell Studio 1550. High Quality settings.
Your machine is better than mine, so I presume you will be able to smoothly run FO3 on it.

OS - Windows Vista 32-bit
CPU - Intel Core 2 DUO (2 GHz x 2 = 4)
RAM - 3 gigs
GPU - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570.

So yeah, definitely capable of running FO3 on High Quality!

And yes, probably should be in Tech section of forum.

EDIT:

Wait I have just thought, FO3 doesn't support more than daul-core CPUs. Apparently it experiences crashes.
However I've heard of a fix through editing a .ini file.

That's wrong. An HD 5470 is a BUSINESS graphics card, designed specifically for charts, graphs, presentations, and spreadsheets, not for games. Mainline Radeons have a "6" in the performance slot for all the HD 5n00 cards, such as the HD 5670, and 5750, plus the 5770. There also is the borderline zone HD 5570 that is decent enough for a game such as Fallout 3, which has generously low requirements.

In order to run on the highest settings, however, a card with an "8" is required, such as the HD 5870. It will handle high resolutions, high quality image settings, and still exceed 60 FPS-plus (as will the HD 4870 from last year).

With the screen resolution set relatively low, the HD 5470 can be used to run Medium Image Quality settings, at 25 FPS or so. That's not up to what the developers named as the minimum (Medium Resolution, and Low Image settings, and 30 FPS).

Sorry probabaly should have done more research.

I just assumed it was a newer graphics card with higher capabilities. Was unaware of the numerical system.

EDIT:

however, if you look here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23698.0.html

It seems to say that "the 3D gaming performance should be above the HD 4570"

Huhh... I'm guessing it'll still run decently though?
I base this conclusion on the fact that I've seen masses of youtube videos of people running games like MW2, Assassin's Creed 1, Assassin's Creed 2, GTA, Mirror's Edge and the like completely maxed on a similar system as mine (in fact some with less gpu memory).

Beginning with their Geforce 6n00, and ending with their Geforce 9n00, nVIDIA followed the naming convention relatively well, although the 6600 and the 6600 GT were actually borderline, not fully Mainline, and the same applied to the Radeon X600 (the 9600 predated the use of the hundreds numbers for performance guidance). After the 9n00 Geforces, it's very difficult to separate out the Geforces for performance.

The G.210 is Low End, way low, and the GT220 / 230 are borderline for the first and barely inside Mainline for the second. The GT240 is pretty close to the middle of Mainline, while the GTS250 is up at the next borderline zone, at the bottom of the High End.

Never waste time trying to compare unlike products. You can compare the Oblivion game, yes, but none of those others. Everyone has his / her own subjective interpretation of such words as "decently". The HD 4550 scores poorly on the benchmarks that are used for games, and the HD 5470 isn't particularly better (some, as per the side by side numbers next): Since current laptops are not supported, and that is because laptop producers will not adhere to any standards, especially with regard to adequate cooling, places such as GPU Review ignore the mobile cards for them. These two are the dekstop versions:

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=584&card2=625

Now, let's look at the game's official recommended Radeon, shall we?

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=625&card2=547

It's really dumb to be comparing to the MINIMUM, in my opinion. The desktop HD 5450 can only manage 18%, 21%, and 40% of the numbers that the recommended card comes up with as scores.

idk i bought a new asus laptop last month...i don't know much about the specs but its a good one. So far I tested a lot of new games like metro etc. and I play it on full graphics which work fine. It's an asus with geforce gt325m 1 gb card i5 core and some more bladibla lol. BUTTTTTT! Fallout 3 runs realy bad on it. At first I wasn't even able to get it to work, I kept on having ctd on playing a new game. I messed around a little bit with the drivers and it works now but it is still realy unstable. The downside of buying a new pc or laptop is always that the latest windows version is installed on it. So I'm currently having windows 7 installed. Back in the days they also used to give you a windows cd with it as well but nowadays everything is like preinstalled. So that kind of s*cks because some games (like fallout 3 for example) don't run well or sometimes not at all, eventhough your specs are good and all? So I have no idea if it will work on your asus laptop. It works on mine but its realy unstable.

but then again...new vegas is coming out in a month or so which will hopefully run perfectly on my new laptop (lol can't wait)....

The Radeon 5470 may pull you some mediumish settings, at least low.
