Does FO3 truly not support Windows 7?

Post » Sat Jul 21, 2012 12:11 pm

I have the boxed GOTY edition. I've played it on Windows XP with no problems. I installed it on my new Windows 7 machine and I'm having some problems. First of all, it isn't showing up in the Start Menu, I have to go to Program Files to find it. Secondly, if I try to run fallout3.exe, I get the "Ordinal 5360 xlive.dll" error. Clearly something to do with Games for Windows Live. Is there a fix for this?

I'm not sure if the Steam version is fixed, or what, but it's still $5 due to the sale for a few more hours. I guess I could re-buy it there, but I don't particularly want to.

Strange.

I upgraded to Windows 7 from XP just a month ago, and installed Fallout 3 from my original Fallout 3 disc (and not Steam) just fine. Well, mostly fine, don't know how many times I had to restart the game because GWFL wanted to install patches and whatnot. But after some hassle all that was done and since then there haven't been any problems.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question, I never had any problem involving xlive.dll. You could try to download the GWFL client from xbox.com and maybe reinstall the game and see if that helps?

Download the new client from here http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/pc/downloadclient

Or apparently just useing the disabler will most likely fix it found here http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/1086

But that might not be the end to your problems , so come back and post us a dxdiag if its still not working.

Ah, I was googling and was recommended the Fallout Mod Manager. I was going to get it anyway for mods. I started it up, read the readme and it's strongly recommended to not install FO3 to Program Files. So I'm going to reinstall to C:/Games. I'm still very new to WIn7 and all the administrator rights and stuff like that.

But yeah, the problem is probably me not having the right GFWL thing. Supposedly the boxed version comes with an older version or something like that. Also, as to the above post, I'm not so sure if it's permitted to talk about a mod that disables GFWL? I know the Mod Manager has a similar tweak/option.

No its fine , atleast that im aware of ... these forums are littered with links to it. But points for being prudent enough to wonder.

Installing outside of program files is a great start.
