There's not really any point to trying to create a "recommended" settings. It'll all come down to personal preference and what kind of atmosphere you'd like.
MGE XE with atmospheric scattering though is a good place to start. Might want to look at using the colour correction in an FXAA plugin also. The MGE XE thread on here will give you most of what you need however.
All you can really do is experiment til you find a style you like through a combination of shaders or lack thereof.
If you use the original MGE you'll have a wider choice of shaders for different effects. Downside is you loose the shadows. It's nice to be able to use palette textures though.
