Hardware stopping me from saving in CS

Post » Wed Feb 17, 2010 10:15 pm

3.20 gigahertz AMD Phenom II X4 955
ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A78T-E Rev 1.xx
ST3500418AS [Hard drive] (500.11 GB)
WDC WD1600JD-00HBB0 [Hard drive] (160.04 GB)
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
(2)Kingston Hyper KHX12800d3k2/4G 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-27

When I load up the CS and load any data, whether I do any work or not if I try to save I get the "You must close all open Dialog Boxes before saving." message, and believe you me that there are no open dialog boxes. Is there any way to fix this and has anyone else had this problem before? My systems is dual boot windows 7(64)(7600) and XP(86) I had this problem before dual booting. I have even reformatted my computer and used different copies of the game and CS installers. It isn't the installer because, I used my CD and installed it on another computer without any problems in the CS. It matters not what patch of the game or CS I'm running because I have tried many different builds.
Thanks alot in advance.

Yes, a lot of people have had this problem and after closing the window they'd moved off-screen, the problem went away.

Sorry, if this sounds rather thick but which window are you referring to? If your thinking I have a dialog box open I didn't have any. I would literally just start the program up and I cant save. If not could you clarify what you meant a little better?

I think Ghastley just means one of the CS windows (dialog box, has nothing to do with game dialogue, it's just any of the non-default windows). That happened to me in Nifskope once, I moved one of the windows out of my monitors borders and could neither see it nor reach it. Even uninstalling and reinstalling Nifskope didn't help, I had to clean the registry manually where the window positions were stored.

If you have reformatted your computer, reinstalled and it still didn't work it is most likely a different issue though.

Just in case it is not (and the only advice I can give) - try to delete the Construction Set ini in documents\mygames. Maybe clean the registry after uninstalling the CS, then reinstall.

You probably do have a dialog open, you just can't see it. The construction set remembers its configuration when you shut down, and restores it when you restart, which can include reopening dialogs. I don't recall if those settings are kept in a .ini file, or in the Windows registry, but you may have to hunt it down in one of those. Alternatively, there's a way to cycle through the open windows of an application (like Alt+Tab does for the apps themselves). Try Ctrl+Tab or Alt+F6 - which one works depends on how the windows are defined.

No I understood what he meant by Dialog boxes, I'm rather skilled in the CS. I have been testing this for almost a week and I have narrowed down the problem to be being hardware. Considering I have it installed on both my boots and I get the same problem on both of them. I have reinstalled and reformatted and tested it on other computers.

As I said I have narrowed the problem down to hardware. Does anyone else have any of the same hardware components as me and doesn't have problems. That might help narrow it down a bit. I would like to know this before I start messing with my drivers and firmware.

Decided to pull out Morrowind and install it. I can save in he Morrowind CS... Don't know if this will help.

Why do you think it's your hardware that prevents you from saving?

Did you try deleting "My Documents\My Games\ConstructionSet.ini" like Phitt suggested?

Well because it didn't work that's why. Like I said I have narrowed it down to Hardware. It may be drivers or firmware. Why would I need to delete my .ini if I have reformatted my computer and re-installed OB and CS. Did you even read what I had said?

Deleting the ConstructionSet.ini is just in case you had restored a backup, I forgot to ask about that.

If you reinstalled it isn't necessarily your hardware that's failing you. There could be error in the windows disk, the drivers or the ConstructionSet installer you downloaded. Did you try downloading those on a different computer? I really doubt it's a hardware issue. That would mean that somehow your hardware makes the CS think it's having a window open, and it's doing it consistently. You're not having other hardware issues, do you?

You could also try setting bAllowUnsafeSave to 1 in the ConstructionSet.ini.

Not a hardware issue. I have very similar hardware to yours (AMD Phenom II X4 965, ATI 4890) And I have no problems with the CS.

Open up the CS, don't load anything...... click on View, and then Open Windows. It should present you with a window that shows what is open, beyond the stock three. (Items window, render window, and cell list. Those don't show up in the window.) Click on the "close all" button, and see if it improves it's attitude any.

Yes, I did try different patch's and downloads along with using the same downloads and I did use the same disk, but it did work on the other computer. In the open windows it is empty. I am going to try that unsafe save. I will tell you if that works. I appreciate your help. Sorry if I seemed rude.

The allowunsafesaves worked thank you so much. If you ever need help with a dungeon being made or a model just ask.

It could be specific to those exact parts, parts from a certain batch, or even to the parts he has in his computer. I don't think that's it though.

Good to hear at least that works. Be aware that the CS will not warn you anymore when you do have a window open with unconfirmed changes. Saving like this is better than not saving at all, but you have to carefully click OK on each window before saving with this setting.
