New to the Fallout series, should I play FO3 or FONV first?

Post » Sat Jul 28, 2012 2:31 pm

Hi so Im planning on getting into the Fallout series and hopefully liking it. The only Bethesda game I've ever played is Skyrim and I do plan on getting into Oblivion but that'll be later as I want to try Fallout now. But I don't know which game to get first. I am curious about New Vegas but are you able to go back to Fallout 3 after playing it or should I just get Fallout 3 first? Thanks for your feedback.

Depends, do you want close to what the series is supposed to be, or do you want TES with guns?

FO3 is more about exploration, FONV is more about factions. There are some people who don't feel they can play X after playing Y, personally I like the difference in emphasis.

IMO New Vegas has better quest design (more complex quests with lots of options and skill checks), writing and game mechanics. while Fallout 3 is more of a standard Bethesda open world dungeon crawler exploring game. Which makes sense because Fallout 3 was developed by Bethesda, whereas New Vegas was developed by Obsidian. The exploration element is smaller in New Vegas and there aren't as many 'dungeons' just for the sake of dungeon crawling. It's more focused on its quests and dialogue.

It's probably best to start with Fallout 3, since it's closer to Skyrim than New Vegas is. Plus if you play New Vegas first, you'll probably miss the weapon modifications, crafting system and the optional hunger/thirst/sleep mechanics when you go back to Fallout 3.

Yeah I've been told there both great games and New Vegas is closer to what the first 2 games in the series were and that FO3 was somewhat different. I dont really care though I just want to basically start on one of these games then play the other one after I play the first one for a while. Fallout 3 does sound similiar to Skyrim maybe I should do that one first.

New Vegas because then you can relate it's locations to where you live. :)

There is a good chance you will be underwhelmed as there are only like 20 side quests in Fallout 3 and hundreds in New Vegas. Fallout 3 just has places that look kinda cool. And New Vegas has more items and stuff, so I imagine if you play Fallout 3 second you will be looking for certain things and never find them.

You should start with Fallout 3 and get a feel for it. Then go to New Vegas, if you thoroughly enjoy New Vegas go find Fallout 1,2, and tactics.

Ya start with fallout 3. Youll get uzed to the mechanics and somewhat lore with fallout 3 then you can appreciate the upgrades that were done fonv. Both great games, id say start with fo3 to get a feel for it and then fonv for whats its really about.

Youll understand playing both games. Just dont go into each game expecting the same thing and remember theres always more than 1 way to complete or do something, most of the time its like 4 or 5 different ways depending on what you wanna do and with "imagination". Lol.

I played 3 first and it was very addictive. However, I'll never play it again after playing New Vegas, though. There is no iron sights and there's only about 7 or 8 things you can craft in F3. New Vegas has tons more stuff to craft and a new skill added for doing so and also boasts a level cap of 50 instead of 30. If you want a more dated dungeon crawler with a few things to do, get 3. If you want a less cluttered environment with 10x the amount of quests, choices, consequences and weaponry, NV is a sure bet. I don't recommend you play NV first because it makes 3 feel too ghetto and non-canonical, because it is.
