Complete Newb

Hey guys so I just purchased and downloaded FONV on my 360 and am excited to jump into it. I have played Oblivion and Skyrim as well as various other rpgs. I was browsing the forums and other sites trying to grasp the concept of how to build my character and what the different aspects of the game are. I have a basic idea of how it works but i was wondering if you guys would have any advice. Any and all advice is greatly welcomed, I look forward to being a consistent participator on these forums. Thanks in advance.

First, learn to read this site: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:Fallout:_New_Vegas Everything you want to possibly know is there, but don't go TOO far ahead to ruin surprises.

Know what kind of character you're going to build. If you want to build a sniper, take perks that enhance critical hits (of course this is good really for all players) and damage. You'll get the hang of it.

One hint from me, at level 14, be ready to take the Jury Rigging perk. That's when you'll start making the most caps. You'll need to have a high enough repair skill to unlock it.

Thanks alot, I definitely will give that site a nice little bookmark lol.

I'm thinking a sniper class at first it seems like it would be fun, but I'll see what I enjoy the first hour or two of playing (which just started now).

I saw that perk come up a ton of times while browsing the forum so I guess it is as useful as everyone was saying it is, I guess I'll have to do some repairing early-game in order to get it.

Thanks for all the help I appreciate it. This forums seems like a safe place to ask questions lol.

You're allowed to ask intelligent questions, yes. Definitely read the portal, read up on the perks and the weapons. Speaking of which, know that some of the better weapons have a strength and skill requirement. If you don't have the proper strength, you won't fire as accurately, if your skill is too low, it won't be as powerful. Like the YCS/186 requires only a STR of 5 which is average, but an Energy Weapon skill of 75. Unless you pour tons of points into EW from the start, you won't see it fire at it's full potential until much later in the game.

Don't be afraid to experiment. Just experiment and have fun with it.

Having said that though, I will suggest that if you wanna make a sniper class, try getting STR of at least 6, Perception of at least 6, decent agility and Luck of at least 6. The 6's are to unlock perks you'll want, agility affects reload speed.
Also if you're going for Sniper, you might opt to take the Trigger Discipline trait. Don't. At first glance you'd think you'd want to take it because it offers more accuracy, but the way Trigger Discipline and Fast Shot work, Trigger Discipline is actually optimal for automatic weaponry whereas Fast Shot is optimal for snipers; the reason being that both of them amplify a gun's accuracy, with Trigger discipline amplifying it for the better in exchange for slower firing speed, and Fast Shot amplifying it for the worse, but for faster firing speed.

Thing is though that it increases or reduces the gun's spread (degree to which the shot deviates from the actual crosshair target), and snipers already have such a low spread that any extra deviation from Fast Shot is NOT noticeable, nor is the improved accuracy of Trigger Discipline. The extra speed though? Oh yeah, you'll notice that. Likewise, automatic weapons do not actually fire faster with Fast Shot, and instead only receive a noticeable reduction in accuracy, as their spread IS high and thus the amp from Fast Shot is more dramatic. Trigger Discipline on the other hand does not slow down firing speed for auto weapons, but does dramatically reduce the spread of them.
