TES:CS crashes every time I try to save!

Post » Thu Feb 18, 2010 10:55 pm

Hi,
I'm trying to make a very simple mod.
All I want to do is add some items to the Jewelry Box that is located in the bedroom in Frostcrag.
So, what I do is I load the construction set with Oblivion.esm, DLCFrostcrag.esp and Eshme.esp

I then open up level two of the tower and drag and drop the items across.
However, when I try to save the CS crashes every single time.

From trying various things it appears that the CS does not allow multiple .esp files to be loaded.

Does anyone know of a way to get the CS to work ?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you're trying to use items from one .esp in another. The CS doesn't normally allow that. Try using http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/De-Isolation_Tutorial.

Already tried that.

I converted DLCFrostcrag.esp and Eshme.esp to .esm files
Opened the CS, checked Oblivion.esm, DLCFrostcrag.esm and Eshme.esm
Copied the items into the box in frostcrag, tried to save and it crashed.

I even tried just loading those three files and selecting save without doing anything at all and it still crashed :(

Is there any way to merge plugins together ?

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8665 has a "Merge Plugins" option. You could also try just converting the Eshme.esp to .esm and moving stuff into the Frostcrag.esp.

I tried converting eshme.esp into .esm and it still crashed.
And I really don't want to modify the frostcrag.esp.

It seems to be a huge limitation of the construction set if you can't create 'patches' to .esp files if you use multiple .esp files.
And with the official add-ons, it basicelly means you cannot create any mods that reference those files!

As a last resort, you can manually add the items you want from the eshme.esp. If it's a jewelry item you're trying to add, go to the "Clothing" heading in the CS and select either Amulet or Ring (depending on which you intend to add), right click in the right-hand section of the Object Window and select "New". In the window that opens, type in an EditorID for the object, a name, the weight and value and then select the meshes that will be used. Note: the Biped Model will be the ItemName mesh and the World Model will be the ItemName_gnd mesh.

That's exactly what I am trying to do and what does not work.
I am trying to add items from Eshme.esp into Frostcrag Tower but apparently that is impossible because the costruction set will not allow you to use anything from one .esp file in another .esp file.

All I am trying to do is add EshmeVendorChest from http://www.box.net/shared/jidghsc00a at the end of the bed on the second level of Frostcrag Tower from http://www.box.net/shared/zakt4h9kkl

Currently trying to figure some way to create a combined .esp file containing Eshme.esp, Frostcrag.esp plus my changes.
Seems like an awful lot of work just to add a simple chest full of clothes into one location in the game.

It's very frustrating when I can't even open the construction set, do nothing what-so-ever and have it crash when I try to save.

Try this: select both .esp files and set Frostcrag as the active file. Find the chest you want from Eshme and change the EditorID. When asked if you want to create a new Form, select "yes". Now try placing the renamed chest where you want it. If it's contents are unique to Eshme, you will have to duplicate those in the same manner and add them to the renamed chest. Note: this is not the recommended way to do things for mods you plan to release, but it does work for personal mods. I've used this technique for my own personal (unreleased) mods with no problems. But, if I tried to release one of these, it would cause more than a few headaches for anyone downloading it.

Thanks for the suggestion but I really don't feel like duplicating several hundred items simply because the construction set is a piece of junk.
I guess an easier work around is I'll try adding a new container outside frostcrag tower (so it dosent need the frostcrag.esp)

I believe Frostcrag.esp alters the landscape of the are it occupies. If that's the case, load the frostcrag.esp and Eshme.esp and set Eshme as the Active file. That will enable you to place the container properly.

I've got a similar problem. I merged a plugin as an .esp, and every time I try to save that, it crashes.
However, if I convert it to an .esm and make my changes in a new .esp, then it's fine.

It's kinda wierd, as I'd prefer to only use the one plugin if I can help it.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8665 has a "Merge to Master" function. Just make a plugin for your master file and then merge it to the master.

I give up.

This is pointless, the CS is totally useless :(
I tried loading up just a single .esp file, I then renamed a container from that .esp file (so it would create a new item) and tried to save it.
Guess what.... it crashed.

Apparently it is impossible to make any changes to any file without the CS crashing.
