Daedric script in Ustengrav

Post » Wed Aug 01, 2012 11:57 pm

Recently I noticed that in Ustengrav, on the Tomb of Jurgen Windcaller it is engraved the name "Windcaller", but with Daedric Script.

Why would a tomb of a Nord use Daedric letters? Especially when the tomb is for a Nord who is a worshipper of Kyne and an elder of a monasteric order of Kyne?

Did Ustengrav have something to do with Dunmer? Or with Jhunal the hermit god and in turn with Hermaeus Mora?

Why does the Steel Plate armor have "NORDPLATE" etched in daedric over several parts of its trim?

Sheogorath is trolling the Greybeards.

Seriously though, I didn't notice! I'll need to go back and check it.

I'm pretty sure daedric script isn't unique to the Dunmer, but I could be wrong. Daedra are all over Tamriel.

It was just so common in Morrowind because the Dunmer worship the daedra, as opposed to the Nords who would sooner burn one than look at it.

I take the Dunmer out because at the time of Jurgen Windcaller the Dunmer were the closest group in or to Skyrim who widely worshipped Daedra and might engrave tombs with Daedric letters. I don't think there would be more Daedric worshippers among general Nords or Cyrodiilics or Bretons than the Dunmers at that time, and there seemed to be no other race then in Skyrim, at least with what we know about that age.

And it was also unseemly for a Nordic Kynic monk to have his tomb carved with Daedric script, even if he might have connection with some Daedra.

So either there's more in it, or it was just a joke from Sheogorath, as Ogatur said above.

Yeah, I've seen many deadric scripts in Skyrim that doesn't make any sense. I can't remember which, but there's more of these weird daedric letters written on things that doesn't fit a daedra worshiper.

Keep in mind that Jurgen's formation of the Greybeards was after the Nords defeat at Red Mountain. Its possible he took some inspiration from Dunmeri culture, though its hard to say really.

Or maybe during the Ascending of the Tribunal, as all of them were so pissed off by those trouble-making Nords, they made sure the tombs of several Nordic figures humilated by their so hated Daedric scripts, no matter whether they died before or after their ascending?

Daedric is Beth's new go-to alphabet when they need a word obfuscated, without regards to whether the people in question would actually use it.
