About to reinstall Battlespire and Redguard

Post » Wed Aug 08, 2012 4:55 am

Anything I should know? It's been a long time since I've had these actively installed on a machine. I admit, my DOS-fu is rusty, and for Arena and Daggerfall, I used some batch files that basically did all the work configuring everything for me.

I set them through Steam for launching, and it's just so nice to see TES I-V all in one list, so I wanted to get Redguard and Battlespire reinstalled in that list.

So, any special tricks for these? Any kind of modern fixes for old bugs? Any kind of new way to install and get them going, blah blah?

Like I said, I haven't had these actively installed on a machine since they were new, so, yeah.

Battlespire shouldn't be much of an issue to get to run in DOSBox, just remember to install the patch too.

Redguard, however, is a technical nightmare to get to run on a modern computer. While the Redguard installer is a Windows program, the actual game is still a DOS game and there are parts of the game that DOSBox can't handle yet.

That's odd, given that (if I remember right) Redguard is a newer game. Huh. So are there any tricks to getting Redguard running in such a state as to get through the entire game?

I've read something of a program that gets Redguard running in glide, though. I also notice in the UESP's installation guide for Redguard, there's a method that doesn't involve DOSBox...

I just want to get everything running so that I-V and the two side stories can all be played to completion.

Needlessly complicated! Ah, well. I'm sure Bethesda doesn't care as much about these two working, as the main series all plays properly.

Yeah, dgVoodoo or Glidos. They won't work if you have a 64-bit Windows though, as it have the 16-bit/DOS support removed and the game is a DOS game. If you have use 64-bit Windows, then you need to emulate it by using DOSBox or something similiar.

I primarily do my gaming (especially my older games) on an XP system. Vista and 7 break far too many older games for me to abandon my XP box entirely.
