There is a lot of content and it can be hard to narrow yourself down when picking a character. I'm sure there's a bunch of tips and tricks that can be passed around.

Traits are like perks, but there are drawbacks to them. Some of them are negligible. For example, sniper oriented characters can find Fast Shot to be very appealing, since their weapons are super accurate and receive almost no penalty for it, while gaining a good increase to Rate of Fire.

Make sure to keep your weapons and armor in good condition, and always be on the lookout for something better. This is an RPG, and realism doesn't count for squat. If you find yourself hurting a lot, I'd recommend possibly Heavy Armor(you know, hide behind a skin of steel) or get a companion. Companions are great bullet sponges and some can dish out a punch, like Arcade Gannon and Raul Tejada.

Do you have a character build in mind?

Also, do you have any DLCs or possibly the Ultimate Edition?

- Turn the difficulty down
- Speech is a valuable skill
- when you first start off don't take any of the north roads unless it's the road up from Novac as they're full of high level enemies

Best advice - imo - would be to follow the mainquest (and do sidequests along that path) until it opens up itself for wider exploration. At that point you'll know the basics.

Go South at first. Going North is very hard to do.

There is no level scaling, there will be many people and things greater than your ability to kill.

Your actions have consequences, factions remember what you do.

Wearing the armour of a faction changes how a faction sees you. Example of you are wearing a Legion outfit, the NCR will attack you.

Talk to as many people as you can. Don't just run and gun.

Thanks for the tips. I went south instead of north becaue I just cant stop dying (The enemies seem invincible to me, lol).
Also, Does the main story affect anything else? (disposition, sidequests, etc.)?

It will. Don't get spoiled here about details, though, just pay attention as you play.
