Access The Player in Construction Set?

Post » Sun Feb 21, 2010 4:30 am

I have a male Dark Elf and can't access his stat box so I can add a custom weapon to his inventory. I've tried looking for him by his ID name and by ''player'', yet the ''player'' stat box lists a completely different character than my own.

How can I access my character in the construction set?

How is your Dark Elf supposed to be in the CS? Do you think there is an entry for every possible character in the CS? The 'player' NPC is indeed the player, the race, class etc you choose is adjusted by the engine in game. But you should not add something to the player entry, especially if all you want to do is add a weapon. Just place the weapon somewhere in the game world for the player to pick up or write a script that adds the weapon to the player.

Well the user in this youtube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHgVvDzL564 puts his custom weapon in the player inventory (for some reason, the name is bendu olo, I think thats the default name of the player having just searched his name on the net).

So what you're saying is you're not mean to simply add the custom item in the player inventory but to place it elsewhere in-game? If that is the case, please can you explain why one method is better than the other?

The reason is that one CS entry can only be modified by one mod...unless the mod user uses workarounds like Wrye Bash. So if your mod modifies the player entry by adding a weapon to it and another mod modifies the player entry by doing something else (like adding a script or adding another weapon) then only the change from the last mod loaded will take effect. That's why it is generally a bad idea to modify the player - there is only one player. Some mods may actually need to modify the player entry to work (just have seen one that adds a script to make an onhit block run on the player) while for your mod there is absolutely no need to do that. It is the easiest thing you can do with CS - just drop an object somewhere in the world (a famous place would be below a statue in the IC market district), go there and pick it up. No possible conflicts, no problems and you still have the weapon.

If you want to add your item to the player, it's not that hard to write a quest script to do it, then make a quest to run the script. The script then stops the quest from running so you don't get the item added more than once (or more than intended, if it's intended to be added more than once).

Okay thanks for the feedback guys, appreciated.

And Phitt that's a good answer I'll take your advice and simply drop the weapon near a landmark, i.e. the pirate ship in IC. Kudos again.
