Oblivion not working (new to PC)

Post » Fri Aug 10, 2012 2:03 pm

Well I recently ordered Oblivion for PC, the old 2006 version. the Installation went fine, and the little Menu pops up.

Play
Data Files
Options
Elderscrolls.com
Technical Support
Uninstall
Exit

I press Play, and there's a small Window in the top left of my screen, looking like it's loading. but then an error occurs

"Oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I checked the more information details and it says:

"Reporting details------------
This error report includes: information regarding the condition of Oblivion when the problem occurred; the operating system version of the computer hardware in use; your Digital Product ID, which could be used to identify your license; and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer."

Now if this has something to do with the computer version, graphics card and all that crap, I have no clue on what any of that stuff is so you'd have to lead me up on that one.

another problem is when I sent the Error report, it suggested I get the patches for Oblivion, but the link it leads to is just a blank page with 404 Not Found on it.

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

It indeed might (or might not) have something to do with your computer hardware. As you are admittedly not very knowledgeable in this regard, let's keep it simple to start off with. You almost had to have bought it pre-assembled rather than assemble one yourself. That computer should have come with documentation listing its major components. Stuff like CPU (processors), memory (RAM), video / graphics subsystem, Operation System, and so on. We need to know that info. Depending on what you tell us, we might need more exotic info, such as the results of dxdiag. But for now the basics will do. PS: if your computer is a major brand and you can't find the documentation, search for it online.

Are you able to successfully run other games on the computer? If so, what are they?

You prolly installed Oblivion into the default recommended directory/folder. That's not a good thing with either Windows 7 or Vista. The general rule of thumb is to install it elsewhere to avoid complications. But you're problem might be more fundamental than that, so for now let's see what sort of computer you have.

Well I know for one thing this computer is definitely low class, but still wondering if it's possible to play Oblivion at the lowest possible settings.

my results for dxdiag thingy are (Only listing what seem's important, computer name and time of date don't seem important)

Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, build 2600)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Vostro 200
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel? Celeron? CPU 420 @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 2550MP RAM
Page file: 681MB used, 2466MP available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

No, Just Oblivion right now, unless we're talking about something as old as Diablo 1, that previously worked.

Yes, I did install it into default (Program Files), If it's not my computer then i'll try that next :o

I believe this Dell has integrated Intel video. That, in addition to your very weak Celeron, make it unlikely that you'll be able to run Oblivion on it. Oblivion is very demanding, requiring a true video card and a pretty good CPU.

There's a lot of other stuff in the dxdiag that are "important" to determine if your machine is up to the task. I'm just guessing, based on a quick look-up of your PC's stats.

Not even on the lowest possible settings?
to clarify, I'm not exactly trying to Play the game, I just need access to it, and would actually prefer to have settings like no Shadows, no sound, low textures.

are you saying even that is not possible? again, Laggyness isn't even a concern.

It depends on your graphics chip, but the older Intel integrated video chips didn't support Hardware T&L, and Oblivion checks for that at startup. If your card doesn't support Hardware T&L, Oblivion will bomb out with an error.
