The "Throat of the World" is the highest mountain in all of Tamriel, and it is in Skyrim.

Did Skyrim's name originate because it is at the 'rim of the sky'? See what I mean?

Sort of like how Hammerfell apparently got its name... a hammer fell there after being thrown.

Hammerfell is also a mixing of Tamrielic(or Cyrodiilic) and Dwemeri. Fell is City in Dwemeri, and the Dwemer used to call this place Volenfell, the city of hammer, as Volen means Hammer. It seems when the Ra Gada landed they translated Volen into Hammer but kept Fell.

As for Skyrim, I don't know if other languages are involved.

I would agree, yeah, throat of the world, skyrim. Could be some other nordic meaning, though.

Good pointing out that translation of Volenfell. There was even that in-universe folktale that the dwemer left for Hammerfell by chucking such a weapon across the continent. Kind of like in that old viking-way of determining property limits by the toss of an axe.

I wouldnt doubt if its some Nede word for "High Peaks" or something like that.

Or its the Cyrodiilc translation of the Original name

"Nords consider themselves to be the children of the sky. They call Skyrim the Throat of the World, because it is where the sky exhaled on the land and formed them."

Something to do with that I expect.
