What is the True Pantheon in TES if there is such a thing?

Post » Mon Aug 20, 2012 7:14 am

Aspects aside, what deities make up the cosmos?

Like Akatosh/Auri-El/What used to be known as Alduin. That would be one deity.

We know the 9 Divines were more a fabrication and amalgamation of gods as opposed to a complete collection.

I guess what gods are there proof of that are the sources for the various aspects in different cultural religions.

Like Lorkhan/Shor being derived from one real being/deity. What are the others derived from?

Sorry if there is some confusion. Having trouble with the wording while I am being kind of rushed irl. Just wanted to ask this.

First, you have the primeval gods. Sithis and Auriel; one of entropy and the other of creation. It is debatable if these beings are anything more than fundamental forces or if they're actually self-aware. They are also known as Padomay (Sithis) and Anu (Auriel.)

Next, you have the Daedric Princes. Azura, Boethiah, Clavicus Vile, Hermaeus Mora, Hircine, Jygglag, Malacath, Mehrunes Dagon, Mephala, Meridia, Molag Bal, Namira, Nocturnal, Peryite, Sanguine, Sheogorath, and Vaemira. Jygglag and Sheogorath used to be one entity (though the events of Shivering Isles have changed that) and Malacath was created when Boethiah "ate" an ancestral Aldmeri spirit, Trinimac. Those who followed Trinimac were turned into the Orsimer, or Orcs.

Finally, you have the Aedra. They were Daedra, but were tricked or convinced by Lorkhan to create the mortal world. Because they put so much energy into it, they, like Lorkhan, could be killed (unlike the Daedra.) There are typically 9, and gamesas has purposely made their history extremely muddled. However, they are *not* constructs as far as we can tell; although there may be conflicting origin stories (such as With Lorkhan/Shor, whose conflicting story basically boils down to "he was right/wrong to create the mortal realm and was unjustifibly/justifiably killed for it.") they all point to the same diety, with the same spheres of influence or roles.

Note that there are other gods outside of the classic Nine Divines; a full table of all KNOWN gods can be found at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Gods . Not all pantheons include all gods as part of worship, but (mostly, looking at you Aldmeri Dominion!) recognize that there are other gods than the ones that they worship.

For all intents and purposes, though, the "True" Pantheon (until otherwise dictated in later games) are the 9 Divines and their opposites, the 17 Daedric Princes. All those other gods aren't major players as far as we can tell, and Sithis/Auriel are just forces of nature.

The closest would be the Atmoran Totem thingy.

Dragon-as-Time
Hawk-as-Nature (Sky)
Bear-as-Temperance (Strength and Mercy)
Whale-as-Progress
Snake-as-Space
Fox-as-Duality
Wolf-as-Family
Moth-as-Art
Owl-as-Wisdom

And maybe

Star-as-Magic

I forgot Orkey in there.

Sithis is the soul of Padomay and Anui-El is the Soul of Anu.

The Aedra weren't Daedra. Both the Aedra and the Daedra (and the Magne-Ge) were Et'Ada. The Cyro-Nordic Divines are the Aedra that represent the Plane(t)s whilst the Aldmeri "Ancestors" are the Ehlnofey/Aedra who managed to escape Mundus after Convention or became a part of Creation.

ALKENO- Can you explain the fox to me? I'm having a hard time connecting duality with death (unless you're just talking about the cycle of life and death, I suppose).

Well I kind of know what gods are there. I am more or less asking which ones are really there or just thought to be real or even if they are all real to some degree or another. I do not believe TES truly has gods in the traditional sense perse but just different beings/Spirits of Varying degrees of strength that seem like they are gods to mortals. Though arguably that is not really much different.

I was also under the impression that the 9 Divines were a fabricated Pantheon consisting of Nordic and Aldmeri pantheons crisscrossed to appease Allesia's Nordic Allies and Subjects that were used to the Ayleid pantheon? Well initially anyways. There is the whole 'if you believe them to be something they start to become it' idea that was thrown around a lot prior to Skyrim. There are also cases like Ebonarm and such. So I think there are more than just the 9 Divines. ALMSIVI aside of course.

I kind of always thought that more than just the eight divines were trapped in the creation of Mundus but they were the ones who gave the most of themselves. While Ebonarm and such are like hanger on'ers. Those who barely survived creation but never fled to Aethurius.

I thought that Ysmir, was the fox, like "Hans the Fox". He would represent duality, such as being an embodiment of the enatiomorph.

While I'm inclined to agree, I'm not going to.

My theory on the totems was that pantheons subgradiate just like everything else. Because of that, the earlier pantheons (Aldmeri and Atmoran; maybe Nordic) are closer to the "truth" than others.

This was my line of thinking when I created this thread. But far enough back you hit the origin of all the subgradience. The Godhead. I guess for the sake of this thread we would have to lool at what Subgradients are currently real and which are not. Which are derived and which are contrived. Though we will be doing some contriving of our own :P.
