Remind me How to Build a Character?

Can somebody remind me of the basics on character builds in non-overhaul Oblivion? I used to always play "Majors as Minors" but I'm not remembering exactly how to do that. Specifically, I canot recall for certain if you level up when any ONE of your major skills finishes or if it is some combination of several of them.

I cannot recall if having only one or two Majors that you actually use in your character's career is the way to go or instead have _all_ the Majors set to 'out of career' skills?

Been a while since I played any Oblivion, but recently got it reinstalled. Apart from a weird sound glitch tht I hope I figure out http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1404995-npc-dialogues-no-sound/](no sounds from NPC dialogues)[/url] it is running fine.

Haven't yet installed OOO and MMM, and I may just go ahead and do that . . . but in the interim I figured I'd fiddle a bit with a 'lightly modded' vanilla build.

Ideally you want to stop leveling at 25ish I believe, for thats when you get the high end quest rewards. Any higher then that and the game just becomes harder.
I believe its every 10 levels of a major = one character level.

So you'd want 3 Majors that your going to use, and the other majors stuff you would never use. If you want to level slowly, then put the 3 majors you'll use as ones you'll use uncommonly.

Good majors to have include Restoration and Mercantile, because they are incredibly difficult to level.

My other criterion for majors was "is there an Apprentice level perk I need at the start" or a Journeyman one I need quickly.

E.g. I might make Conjuration a major so I could summon a skeleton as a weak sparring partner for my fighter. It's not a skill he'd use much for anything else, so it was easily controlled. I'd likely make Armorer a major to be able to repair enchanted items ASAP. That one has the advantage of letting Heavy and Block be minors, which get used a lot, and still get steady advance in Endurance. Chameleon has a level requirement, so Mysticism could be another for a start boost. And so on...
