Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls game, is it worth picking

Post » Wed Aug 22, 2012 12:08 am

I am new to the ES Franchise, entering the series on Skyrim. I've heard a lot of good things about Morrowind and Oblivion in the past but never got around to trying them. Recommended?

On PC?

If so, then hell yes. If not... I suppose so. Maybe.

Morrowind more so (as an unmodded game).

Yes, absolutely. Oblivion's main quest is so-so, but guilds and side quests are excellent, and Shivering Isles is the best TES expansion to date (personal opinion).

Morrowind is brilliant in its entirety (yes, I'm terribly biased :P).

If you can, get them on PC and mod the hell out of them!

Morrowind is a here's a journal and a map, now go and figure the rest out your self sort of game. At the beginning its almost impossible to hit anything.

Oblivion they give you a compose and markers which make it easier. The main quest is amazing as its somewhat fun and compelling. The guilds are amazing too and have great plots.

I recommend Oblivion.

In my view it does some things better than Skyrim. And the graphics are still very good, particularly with re-texturing mods. Except for the NPCs which appear a bit cartoonish - NPCs are particularly difficult to get right.

I recommend eventually consider using some mods like OOO, MMM, Quarls retexture, Natural Environments, nGCD, etc. To greatly improve the game. Again in my opinion. Since it's been around for a while, there are some really great mods for Oblivion.

....

Me too. But I'll eventually go back to Skyrim. I really like both games.

I also recommend considering Fallout 3. It's a different game world but it's the same type of open world game with similar game mechanics.

i think all ELDER SCROLLS SHOULD STILL BE Like Morrowind at least in the quest thing why? well they send your directions yes but in real life you dont really know where it is or see a RED thing on you compass so thats the only thing i miss thats why i like DARNUI to remove the quest markers

This same thead shows up just about weekly it seems, only the OP is different. "I bought X game, and now I want to buy Oblivion. Should I?"

Only you can answer that question for yourself. We're all gonna tell you to buy it, but most of us are biased because this is the OB General forum, so of course we all love it. Plenty of folks hate it though, for a variety of reasons. The main mistake many make is they expect Oblivion will be the prequel to Skyrim, and it really is not. Both are stand-alone games, with features that mostly are very different from one another.

If you're really in doubt, buy it anyways. It doesn't cost much nowadays, and if you dont' like it, you can return it. Thank you.

1. Suggest getting the Game of the Year Edition which includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions. Both of which are quite famous and popular. I suppose Steam sells some sort of package like that eh?

2. Make sure to patch up, both the official final patch http://www.gamesas.com/topic/477081-patch-dlc-plugin-information/

and the Unofficial Oblivion patch http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/5296

3. Before going for any of the 'major overhaul mods' (like Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, and Martigens Monster Mod, as suggested above [which I also highly recommend]) consider playing the game till you feel like you "understand" vanilla pretty well. There are lots of smaller mods that do not fundamentally change vanilla game mechanics which you might consider installing from the start else very shortly after start. Here I have in mind things like "A Takes All," "Harvest Flora," "Keychain," "Denock Arrows," "Actors Can Miss," etc.

Enjoy!

As an extension to this, disregarding the Unofficial Patches which are Fundamental Must Haves - at least try the game as vanilla as possible before diving into the mods. So many folk come on and say "I've just got Oblivion, what mods are best?" - try it vanilla(ish) for a little before you start twiddling with it...
(And that's from someone who is a confirmed modder)!

Also do bear in mind, as has been said, that Oblivion is NOT a prequel to Skyrim, it's NOT like Skyrim AT ALL. It's much more chill and relaxed and does not really work with Technical Character Builds and endless discussions on the minutiae of levelling figures.
Just play who/what you want how you want.
