Can't Figure Out DOSBox

Post » Fri Aug 24, 2012 2:52 pm

I'm a little frustrated trying to get Arena to work on my laptop. I've downloaded DOSBox 0.74, created a new folder called "Games." When I downloaded Arena, it created its own folder in the Games folder.

I then opened DOSBox and followed the instructions listed on the official DOSBox Wiki. Specifically the page "Basic Setup and Installation of DOSBox." (I can't post links.)

I hit a snag with the CD command: C:\>CD Arena

When I type this I get an error message saying, "Unable to change to: Arena".

I am completely lost. Before going to the official Wiki, I tried following the instructions in the sticky thread, but I couldn't get far with those.

I've also tried creating a shortcut to see if I could get around whatever problem I was having. I created a shortcut to the DOSBox .exe titled "Arena." As instructed on the Wiki, I changed the text in the target box to:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -userconf "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" "C:\Games\Arena\A.exe" -noconsole

If I understand this correctly, the game should launch from double-clicking this shortcut, but it doesn't seem to work. What I get is the DOSBox textbox with a message saying, "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."

I should probably mention what I see in my Arena folder. There are lots of things in there, but when I finished installing it, it said that it might not have installed properly. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I install with recommended settings or not. There are four .exe files that I could find, including one simply titled "A," which I assume to be the thing I'm trying to run.

I honestly have no idea where to go from here. Any technical assistance would be very much appreciated.

Included with the http://www.elderscrolls.com/arena/, there is a Arena106 Setup.pdf file with install instructions, have you tried those?

Also, what do you write when you mount the C drive? And where exactly did you put the Games folder? Is in C:\GAMES or is it located in your DOSBox folder?

And the shortcut won't work as you're not using the -userconf command correctly. You need to make a config file to use the -userconf command, you can't direct it to the DOSBox.exe. The http://www.dosbox.com/DOSBoxManual.html also state the following.
Important!: In Windows Vista/7 the configuration file won't work correctly if it is located in "Windows" or "Program Files" folder or their subfolders, or directly on c:\, so the best place for storing extra configuration files is for example: C:\oldgames
Or in your case, C:\Games, I suppose.
