Just Got Fallout

Yeah, but it shows its age these days with the broken quests and glitches.

I don't see how these have anything to do with age. Fallout 3 (especially the DLC) also has lots of these.

It doesn't have anything to do with age. Every game has glitches, and the more complicated the game, the more glitches it will likely have. FO1 had it share, as does FO3.

I gave it an 8, no 9 simply because I'm not a fan of the turn based combat, though I have to say by the end of the game it had grown on me in a chess like way and I was keen to get into Fallout 2.

The writing (quest or otherwise) is superb though, it's the only area where I truly find Fallout 3 lacking (other than the crashes and the bugs but the original Fallouts have plenty of those even with the latest unofficial patch) and I have no real problems with the dumbed down SPECIAL *gasp* I'm also big fan of first person perspective for RPG's but quality writing and thoughtful portrayal of a society are critical no matter the viewing angle.

Yeah, but these things were never fixed, by official patches or fan patches. I've recently completed Fallout 3 clocking in at 105 hours and I didn't run into any quest stopping glitches, unlike Fallout 1 in which I've been experiencing one after the other.

Fallout has its share of odd conversations and some cheap stuff. Speaking to the Skulz ganger who immediately attacks you for simply talking to him, then having the quest remain to 'deal with the Skulz gang'. It amazes me how much people speak of a lack of C&C in F3 but don't seem to remember some of the lack of it in the originals.

the whole glitch matters seem pretty random to me.
I seriously don't remember having major problems with fallout 1 & 2, except those that were caused by censorship (i.e. the quest in modoc with the missing boy - I could never finish the quest because there were no children at all, etc..). but probably I just missed most of the glitches because I've been too deep into the game..
all in all it's futile to argue about the glitches, imo. you'd think after over 25 years of gaming history there shouldn't be any glitches in any game at all. but they are still there. and as long developers don't care about their responsibility for result, they will always be.

Well its not just the glitches. I keep hearing about how Fallout 1 & 2 had real C&C while F3 is completely lacking in it. From my memory and experience replaying Fallout 1 I just don't see that. In some ways Fallout 3 has more C&C than Fallout 1, minus of course the ending screens which seriously should have been brought back for Fallout 3.

Yeah the lack of any serious effort in the ending montage is probably the peak of my annoyance with F3, it demonstrates to me that Beth either aren't capable or aren't willing to write a complex narrative, I think Pete Hines once said that the writing wasn't a thing they were too concerned with and their judgement has without a doubt been proven correct as evidenced by the millions of dollars the game is making them...and of course the game is still a [censored] load of fun, it just requires more suspension of disbelief than most.
