Toothbrushes

Post » Mon Aug 27, 2012 3:59 pm

So have they invented toothbrushes in the Elder Scrolls Universe? I mean just imagine making out with someone who hasn't brushes their teeth at all in their life. I'm just wondering for story purposes if they have such a thing.

Also razors? Hairy armpits on either male or female is really unattractive. Do they shave too? I'm so curious.

and being they don't ingest massive ammounts of sugar daily like we do, brushing is more or less unnecessary

i don't think so, and in my oblivion game i think everyone had bad teeth (could be modded in though). And they have razors as many people don't have beards, but i doubt that peasants really care too much about body hair.

As my history teacher used to say "people were datin and matin long before tooth brushes and deodorant came around"

It's not just sugar that rots your teeth. I mean the smell of old meat on someone's breath is not as yummy as people might think.

Twigs, used to clean teeth for over 5000 years. Also, gargle with urine. Seriously. Imperials (for instance) would probably go with the Latin tradition of tooth picking (brass, gold or silver "tooth picks") and urine gargling.

Yes, Ammonia whitens, while the uric acid destroys them. But the common item would be the chew stick, or twig. Perhaps nobles would have horse hair or hog back hair brushes.

Let me see, they definitely shave somehow.

As for teeth, well I once saw a documentary about life in medieval times. While Tamriel in the third and fourth era is not medieval times, it was very informative about how teeth were cleaned before toothbrushes. It involved eating a lot of course foods to scour teeth clean by accident, as i recall.

Oh, and I expect the people of tamriel, the peasantry at least, to stink horribly. However I would also assume that nobles use the expensive Sload Soap as well as other cleaning agents and perfumes.

just made me realize that anyone who can use the flame cloak spell can effectively purge any bacteria or odor from their bodies thanks to this guy
also like he said, potions
if you're poor or cant use magic you are prolly gonna get aids and die in a foul smelling ditch somewhere
if you are a mage or alchemist you prolly dont have aids

Well since magic and potions are so widely available, not to mention divine blessing altars literally curing most minor ailments at a touch while providing special abilities, means death by disease is probably only a concern for illnesses of a magical nature like Corprus and the Blight or for those living far from other human/elven habitation.

It makes sense that potions, spells and enchanted items can prolong one's life and preserve one's health. It's strongly implied the Telvanni reach extreme lifespans because of their sorcerous ways. Divayth Fyr is a famous if extreme example. I'm sure he doesn't get many cavities.

They might not have toothbrushes as we know them, but of course they'd have to have some way to clean their teeth. Perhaps Cyrodiils of some means prefer boar-bristle brushes over the rags the peasantry uses, while Morrowind's Dunmer prefer bone picks used in conjunction with a dental powder made of ash yams to keep the disease from their teeth. Nords chew mountain flowers and if that doesn't keep their teeth free of ache, they just drink until they don't care anymore. The Altmer invest a fortune into keeping their teeth perfect, but I bet that the Orsimer wise-women must have closely-guarded dental secrets that even the fussy goldenrods don't know. After all, Malacath frowns on (and then bashes with a hammer) orc warriors who have to sit out from battle because of tusk-ache and abscesses they could have prevented if they just chewed some bark with soot-paste. Regardless of race or country, I'm sure every alchemist must stock all manner of potions and powders to keep teeth clean and, if not white, reasonably good looking. In fact, various everyday things like toothpaste, face cream, and pain killers probably make up the bulk of their business.

As for shaving, I'm sure men of all cultures (except Argonians and the furry Khajiit) have some method of keeping the beards off their faces, but they probably vastly differ on everything else by country. I could perhaps see Dunmer of both genders just waxing off everything below the neck (Vivec, for one, seems to have no body hair whatsoever, but he might have CHIMed it off) but I bet Nordswomen have legs and arms as downy as ducks. It's cold in Skyrim and they need all the protection they can get when they go off to wrestle bears or whatever Nords do for fun besides breathe mead. Besides, shaving's for prissy little Bretons who probably can't hold a sword.

That might not be too far off. I mean, I doubt they'd use a full sized sword, but in a pinch a sharpened dagger might work. They wouldn't have the fancy Gillette razors with interchangeable pivoting heads and five blades to give you that extra-close shave, of course, but they might have some form of early straight razor. Men have been shaving for centuries. Even if you don't care too much about your personal hygiene or appearance, at the very least it gives your enemy one less thing to grab.

Either that, or Sheogorath simply forbade beards from growing until about the 4th Era.

And if all else fails, a misplaced fireball spell will clean ya right up. :D
