Nvidia SLI slowing down Morrowind?

Post » Thu Feb 25, 2010 2:06 pm

Hi there,

i reactivated my second GeForce 8800 GTS and made a SLI setup of my graphiccards becaues after a lot of mod implementation the fps began to svck. Thats where my problems started. (of course i have the latest drivers) I had major slowdowns. First i thought it's because of the Physx engine which is unsupported by Morrowind. But no, only with SLI turned off Morrowind is playable in a acceptable speed. Can somebody confirm this problem, or even better know a workaround to use both cards in SLI mode and enhanced speed?

/edit: i'm sorry that it's not really mod relevant, but i believe in this section are the most technical competent users :)

I don't really know but I did a google for sli slower and the first 3 results mentioned nvidia 8800s. So other people are experiencing it, but I didn't read enough to see if there is a well-known solution.

I don't have an SLI config but I do use nHancer. Apparently the default profile for Morrowind is to use AFR, looking at http://www.nhancer.com/?dat=d_sli it might be worth trying AFR2 and/or messing with some of the compatibility flags.

Do know what specifications your ram have and the totally ram you have installed?
I think http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=36442 may help you.

Thank's for all your answers, after the post of john.moonsugar i googled myself and found exactly that thread. I'm still unsure, but i believe it's because of my Mainboard (Asus P5N-E SLI) which have 16x PCI-e in single mode and only 8x in SLI mode. Powersuply is a Sharkoon Silent-Storm 700W, CPU is Intel Core2Duo E6600 2,4 @ 2,76 GHz and RAM G-Skill 4GB DDR800 @ 960.
best regards

8x in SLi mode won't/shouldn't affect your performance.

That's what i thought, but everything seems to point on it. All other options make even less sense. :(

Hi there,

(of course i have the latest drivers)

This may be your problem, I had serious issues with morrowind performance when upgrading past drivers 196.21, have you tried rolling your drivers back to see if you still have those issues? I know that 197 drivers were causing me serious pains with the newer svn revisions of MGE so I reverted back, and I haven't had a problem since.

Tahnks for suggestions, i'll check this out. I excluded system specific reasons by trying several combinations in 3D Mark06 and
with SLI activated i get a boost of ~20% in SM 2.0 and ~40% in HDR/SM3.0 but in Morrowind itself noSLI still brings 2-4 FPS more. :brokencomputer:
I mess a little more with nhancer settings, nice tool by the way thanks Dragon32, and try a earlier driver revision.

/edit: with MGE svn 3.8.2 rev145 the game doesn't even boot with SLi active, only version working for me without plroblems is 3.8.1 rev126fixed. No matter if i use driver 196.21 or 197.45 :( somehow i meesed with my water textures, but i have a backup. :sb:
