Advice for a spellsword

Last night, after running headlong into some Skyrim fatigue, I booted up Morrowind for another go at this great game.

My last character was an Imperial Acrobat (premade class) who did the Thieves' Guild and the main quest.

This time, after I answered his questions, Mr. Ergallia at the census office decided that I was a spellsword.

Cool - I've never played that kind of character before. I went with Breton as the race and Mage as the sign, reasoning that Magicka was harder to come by than combat experience.

I'm thinking about the Fighters' Guild, Mages' Guild, and/or possibly the Imperial Temple as big questlines.

But anyone have any advice for a character that is clearly a blend of two different styles - combat and magic? Is Destruction good enough for a ranged skill, or should I be working up Marksman (which is miscellaneous for this class)? Spellsword gives me Long Blade as a major, and both Axe and Blunt weapons as minors.... should I try to work those up, or just focus on Long Blade?

Marksman can be devastatingly effective with enough effort, but it's slow to get good. Your choice.

I'd work on one backup weapon type, but not two.

I just retired a very similar character who was created in a similar manner (return to Morrowind after many years, going with the flow instead of putting a deep thought prior to character creation, and Mr. Ergallia to my big surprise claimed that my Imperial is a spellsword, so spellsword she was). Very soon it became clear that she wasn't sent to Vvardenfell as a simple, weak prisoner - she clearly had high authority back in Cyrodiil, and was sent to strengthen Empire's presence in Vvardefell. Through Imperial Cult and Imperial Legion, in her case.

Gameplay-wise, an Imperial Spellsword seemed a very easy character to play from the very beginning. You start with very decent combat and magic skills - long blade, blunt, block as well as restoration and alteration and other very useful skills good to go - enchant, alchemy, medium armor and destruction. You're really equally good with all around magic and weapons, and easily can go whichever way you want or both.

As a Breton born under Mage, you're better off with Destruction than with Marksman. Other than that, just join your guilds of choice and go with their requirements.

My Long blade skill reached 100 ridiculously quickly, so in order to not get bored too soon and to fit in Imperial Cult, I began to carry with me a sword for emergency and otherwise conjure up a mace. Never used Destruction, but used Restoration and Alteration a lot. But for a Breton born under Mage, I'd probably use magic more and 1 magicka costing conjured weapons as a secondary choice.
