How would I go about getting custom textures in the game?

I've been making custom textures for the Source engine (like http://i.imgur.com/PKuuG.jpg) for quite a while now, and now I'm interested in making my own for New Vegas. I have literally zero experience with the G.E.C.K., I don't even know if I'd need to use it for this. Basically, can someone tell me how to get my .tga texture files into the game? What format do they need to be in? What directory? Do I have to overwrite the current textures?
