[REL] Improved Gold Weight

Post » Thu Feb 25, 2010 10:10 pm

Yep, another gold weight mod. This one is a little different though. It neither adds dummy items to your inventory, nor directly changes the weight of gold (with its inevitable consequences). Instead it uses the Remove Item "Feature" that can subtract weight by removing an item you don't have OR add weight be removing an item that weighs less than nothing which you do not have. (If that's confusing, just ignore it.) :)

The point is the most seamless gold weight mod yet (unless there's a better ones using MWSE, I haven't explored those). Of course nothing is perfect, there is one minor seam. Removing even imaginary items will show a message if you're in dialog. But you have a choice of how to handle it:
  • Block updating gold's effect on your encumbrance while in menu mode. (Just close and re-open to update.)
  • Put up with a few junk messages when you gain or lose gold in dialog. (I made them as unobtrusive as possible)
  • Compromise and only only update in menu mode if you're sneaking. The default. This make perfect sense because you have to um... crouch down to count the gold carefully, yeah that's it.
You can easily switch between these by changing a global variable. You can also change how much gold actually weighs to suit your preference.

Brilliant idea! With gold weight, another of those "Can't be done (better)" issues has been solved - amazing. :)

This mod will make an excellent addition to any bank mod. Finally my character will have an actual reason to use the banking system. (I didn't use the previous gold weight mods because of the problems you mentioned.)

See, we knew the encumbrance issue was a feature rather than a bug.

This is a brilliant idea, thanks for sharing it with us! :goodjob:

Oh good. I was afraid I spent too long explaining the problems and this would sound like it was buggy. :)

I'd like to hear from anyone who's tried it, especially if it turns out it IS buggy. I tested it of course but haven't played with it for any length of time yet.

Incidentally if anyone is interested in redistributing it as part of a banking mod, economy mod, or whatever you're welcome to do so. The only thing I ask is that you rename the script and global vars unless you leave it as a separate esp. Just in case I update this, I don't want it to conflict.

Hi, I have recently tested your Gold weight mod and as far that I can tell it works perfect, great work.

I've heard from several people who've been using this. So first of all I'm glad you'll liked it.

But also I wanted to ask something. For people who play with this mod, what settings do you use for the global variables? I'll put it in the readme as a suggestion if there seems to be a consensus.

I keep the default. I think it works really well.

It's a great improvement, this mod. Real old school.

That's not really related to this mod... but I guess I see the connection. No, items will not be taken by NPCs, nor will they disappear on their own. Of course I wouldn't leave a pile of gold in the town square, but that's just for roleplay purposes. It's actually perfectly safe.

Just a little update.

I discovered that my code for preventing weight changes in dialog (and the resulting junk messages) didn't work if you received gold in a greeting (rare, but it happens). I added a one frame delay to deal with this. Same download location. It's safe to upgrade from the previous version, you'll see an error message, but you can ignore it.

P.S. Someone should have told me about this before. :P

Thank you for this, ManaUser. I had missed it.

And that would have been a loss; much improved gold weight. Elegant.

First I must say I just read about the encumberance "bug" myself just today for the first time and to see it used in this way...
Brilliant!

Will use once I start assembling my game-play pack o mods.

IMO it's simply the best Gold Weight mod ever created. Very good for role playing especially when used in conjunction with http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/mad_weather/ by Kir. I don't use either mods at the moment because I try too doing a playthrough with a very limited collection of mods. Mainly bugfixes, Better Bodies+BC, Abot's bird mod and personal tweak mod heavily inspired by BTB's Game Improvements. But I can highly recommend it for two reasons:
1) It works really well without breaking anything as long as you don't remove it mid-game. But if you already has applied the code patch it's very safe too remove it.
2) It's fun and damn hard, but only with IndyBank. You'll really be needing those letters of credit :)
