There's that odd fantasy staple where elves tend to be ... chameleon-like (?) compared to humans. Lamarck's biology and stuff. Become your environment. Dunmer stepped away from that motif, sort-of, where their ashskin was not so much a cause of the volcano but a god's punishment.
Bosmer though. I've always thought they were the feral barbarians of modern elves (in TES). They all have vixen fox cheekbones in A Dance in the Fire (granted, it's the deluded misadventure of a panic-ridden minimum wage clerk). Chalk up to the dangers of Valenwood and maybe a dash of Wild Hunt, said above.
The Maomer are similar, come to think of it. They're pale and glossy, like ... jellyfish? Shrimp? Become the old merris they drink and remember :>
