Will Skyrim have a proper magic system?

I have played many RPGs where you end up questing long and hard to get some spell in your spellbook, which is full of unique spells with different mechanics, each of them unique, and finding some amazing, unique spell locked away in an evil dungeon was like finding the best sword in the game as a warrior.

Compared to these games I felt the magic system in previous elder scrolls games was a bit of a let down, most spells were just coloured blobs and you could even make your own coloured blob for a large amount of money. The point is it was magic that didn't really feel like magic at all. Just a blob you shoot to kill things, kind of like an arrow with a different skin.

I was playing might and magic 3 the other day (1993) and it seemed to have a better spell system than what was in morrowind as different damage spells behaved differently and it didn't just feel like you were shooting arrows with a coloured blob as a skin whenever you cast a spell.

Are there any plans to make it more interesting in Skyrim?

I agree, the magic system does need an overhaul. But the color blobs and the issue with spells looking the same could be related to the graphics. And hopefully you aren't able to learn 100000 different spells. How would you remember them?(I like the Demons Souls method of magic)

That'd be nice, even just a few small changes could make a good difference.

Bursts, Walls, or Streams of different attack types. It would be nice to see more spells like Finger of the Mountain too, something you have to search for, something that requires a lot of mana, and something really powerful.

You my topic starter, probably don't know how to make the elder scrolls magic system fun. Don't blame it just adapt to it. This isn't "Might and Magic" (my god that game made me throw up). Just like not everyone eats the same not everyones magic system is the same. RPG = use your imagination.

i completely agree, the current magic system is monotome and laughable

maybe bethesda should play baldurs gate 2 and learn a thing or 2 about what a mage can do.

If I wanted to use my imagination I would play pen and paper games.

On the note of many spells, I've got an idea for reform of that. There should only be spells from the guilds as training ideals for certain effects. Wizard Rend would teach you how to use the paralyze and silence effects, but after you've "mastered" the spell by being able to cast it perfectly, you can combine the effects with other things to make your own spells that can cross magical schools. Spell effects can then get better as you level your skills past them, like the basic fireball you learn. Once you're past the level of that fireball, you can cast it faster and faster for less mana cost.
