Strange FPS drop GTX 680

Post » Tue Oct 16, 2012 4:05 am

Hi guys, i hope you can help me with this problem its being haunting me for a long time and i cant find a solution on any forum.

i decided to install Crysis 2 and play it on Ultra settings with the High texture patch + DX 11 patch on 1920x1080.

1.) The frame rate is usually around 60fps BUT it drops down quite fast and quite many times in action areas, especially when i go down a sewer it "magically" goes down from 60fps to 55fps or even to 45fps sometimes and this happens when i do nothing, just staring into the sewer water or starring at the distance of a sewer. It goes back up to 60 fps right away and immediately when i'm looking to the sky or exiting a sewer .

2.) Repeatedly shooting at water-pools and or fountains, or when smoke is generated by my bullets causes the framerates to go down to between 45fps and 21Fps .

3.) Switching off the DX11 doesnt cause any framerate drops at any moment.

what i already did :

- installed and uninstalled the game numerous times, clean install.
- updated all drivers and patches

I am very shocked about this and i cant believe its happening, i worked hard for this card and spend alot of money just to play Crysis 2 at the ultra high settings with high resolution textures and DX 11 settings but these fps drops really hurt me.. i'm not a rich guy or anything and need to work hard but expect something in return.

my rig :
i5 2500K @ 4,5Ghz
8Gb DDR5 @ 1600
Asus GTX 680 2Gb driver version 306.97
1Tb F3 spinpoint HDD
Windows 7 64bit

please tell me what to do what is going on ??
Do i need to buy a 2nd GTX 680 ? ? If that helps i will work more harder to buy a 2nd card i really hope you guys know this problem or even better the solution.

many thnx in advance ( sorry for my bad english )

If you still haven't overclocked your GPU, then you should do so. The most reliable software used in that purpose is EVGA Precision X (forget about MSI Afterburner, it's not compatible with the new Nvidia generation). Here's an easy guide that should help you:

If that's not the problem. switch your graphic settings to High (you barely notice any difference).

If that doesn't help either then go ahead and buy another 680. If you have the money, then why not. You never regret buying more power in the long run.
