Has anyone wondered why the combat in morrowind is how it is?
Ive noticed alot of people chaulk it up to game mechanics and outdated hardware and some other reasons, but could it be that the combat is the way it is meant to be? After spending some time on the obsidian project eternity kickstarter and finding and talking with pnp roleplayers, ive come to the conclusion that its meant to be that way. Hear me out.
Now morrowind got that special something that alot of us cant put our fingers on. Its got story, atmosphere, lore, beautiful landscape, and options galore. But I think I may have reasoned out a reason why its so great. Now im not here to bash oblivion or skyrim, they are great and good games in what they are trying to do, but they come off as "action" rpgs imo. I think one of the reasons morrowind got that "it" is because its not an "action" rpg but basically trying to be a "pnp"" rpg.
I mean its got options and story galore, and even has choice and consequence and pretty much almost total freedom that u can kill the "good" guys and simy break the quest but gives an option for completing the mq a backdoor way.
But the combat is so eeryly semilar to pnp style roleplaying games. From the misses from low skill in weapons, to the chance to fail at spells and crafting, hell down to the way magic only regenerates if u rest or take potions.
When realizing that morrowind is trying to be a "pnp"" roleplaying game and not an "actiony" roleplaying game, the combat make sense and even seems to hit deadon many of the dnd rules and structure of combat.
So imo I believe the combat way it was done was done intentionality and noy due to hardware or etc, but that they nailed the combat perfect for its trying to ne a "pnp"" game.
Sorry if others had already come to this conclusion, but what ate yals thoughts?
