So what his name was saying he just got this thing called a mezzer, so how did they get slaves before? and how come the lone wanderer can't use this technique? not the mezzer the way they did it.

I'd imagine they'd assualt them and capture them that way or threaten them with a weapon of some sort, bargaining their life. With the mesmetron, it just makes things a whole lot easier within capturing people.
