[REQ] Remove run speed reduction on power armour

Post » Fri Mar 05, 2010 4:14 am

I would have thought someone would have done this already but I can't see it anywhere except in some of those "ZOMG Why doesnt Power Armour turn me into liberty prime??!?! FIXED!!" style mods. Any chance someone could just remove the run speed reduction, it's such an arbitrary penalty, it doesn't make any difference to the difficulty of combat, it's just an irritation having to constantly equip/unequip it for long runs.

Discouraging players to use more powerful items by making them annoying to use is not good game design ?_?

Just search the settings list in the GECK for Speed or Heavy until you find something like fMoveSpeedHeavyArmorPenalty or fMoveSpeedArmorHeavyMult or something else appropriate that's likely to be 0.8 or whatever % reduction in speed heavy armour grants, and set it to 1.

This will be implemented in my upcoming conversion of TUPAM from FO3 to FNV.

Powered Power Armor, which I'll be transferring over from FO3, has a couple of power armor upgrades that will increase runspeed, one by a fixed amount, and the other by an adjustable amount but at the cost of higher power draw and more rapid overheating.

That'll do nicely, thanks. I just really hate the mechanic. Does nothing for gameplay it just adds that constant annoyance when you've been running for ages with power armour on and your weapon out and you suddenly realise the trip could have gone much faster. So you take the armour off and holster your weapon, then inevitably the next time you get into a fight you'll be almost dead before you realise you've forgot to put your armour back on...just annoying.

It's not bad game design, it's adding a penalty to using more powerful items. There are trade offs. "More powerful" shouldn't mean "Oh look, Power Armor, NOW I AM GOD WITH NO PENALTIES WHATSOEVER!"

Positive effects are (and should be) often offset by negative effects. That's part of the structure of classic RPGs.

Anywho, this gives me an idea... Hmm.

Edit: By the way, you could always bind a light/medium suit of armour to the hotkeys, and your power armour to another for easy switching.

Yes strong positive effects should be offset with negative effects to keep items balanced for example high damage can be offset with low reload speed. What should NOT be done is offsetting strong positive effects with nuisance, that does not balance the item. The item remains as powerful as it was, the only downside is that it's so unpleasant to use that you might just throw it away so you don't have to deal with it.

I already said that IS what I do. As I already pointed out, having to constantly remember to take armour off to run and then put it on when you get into a fight does not make the game more fun and removing this pointless irritation would not make the game any less challenging.
