Illusionary Armies, uses of Illusion in War

Post » Fri Nov 02, 2012 2:46 pm

Does anybody have anything regarding using illusion magic to create illusionary armies? I recall (perhaps incorrectly, perhaps only a figment of my imagination) something about Tiber doing it to Vivec once, but are there any other times such a tactic were used?

And are there any recorded instances of spells like Fear, Frenzy, or Rally being used?

I'm trying to think up of additional ways to use Illusion in battles and stuff, besides invisibility, light/night vision, and paralyze. Especially since some of those overlap with Alteration.

I remember the imperial battlemages casting water breathing spells onto the entire army to cross the inner sea to assault the dunmer, but I don't know if that's the instance you were thinking of. I don't remember illusion magic being used on an entire army though.

Whoops, yeah that was the example I was thinking of. And that's Alteration, I suppose.

I'd assume the Thalmor would be able to do it all the time, creating fake, hologram-esque armies to distract their enemies. Especially if you subscribed to the "Void Nights was just a huge invisibility spell on the moons!" theory.

I seem to remember that Illusion was one of Queen Potema's tactics during the War of the Red Diamond, but I could be completely off there.

Also, the battlemages wading through the Inner Sea fought for Reman III at the end of the First Era, not Tiber Septim at the end of the Second (or beginning of the Third, not sure when it was exactly when he moved against Morrowind).

Hmmmm....just imagine the power of a volley of arrows each enchanted with Frenzy for a very large radius. It would decimate and demotalize an enemy army in a matter of hours with hardly any involvement. However i would assume counter measures are taken by the opposing enemies mages. Otherwise we have no baseplate upon which to consider Tamriellen battle tactics.

IIRC That's from 2920. So it's First Era.

I did say that. My parentheses enclosed some confusion about Tiber Septim, yes, but that nothing to do with those battlemages.
