Just after the Nukes

Post » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:16 am

Great war lasted Two hours from start to end. So unless the game is only two hours long then fine. Seems to me that such a short game would be really boring.

The launching of the Nukes did, but there was full scale combat for a long time prior (Anchorage).

The Great War started at the exact moment when the nukes were launched.

That was the Sino-American War (2066-2077) the war between USA and China. China invaded Alaska in an attempt to get the last oil there. Over the years china finally ran out of fuel for their armies and America created Power Amrour and started invading China.

Europe was going through the resouce wars with the Middle East and nukes were used but then the middle east ran out of oil. The EU fell apart becoming quarrelling bickering nation states bent on controlling the last remaining resources on earth.

Like I said before and rusina pointed out the Great War was when the nukes were let loose and in two brief hours most of the planet was reduced to cinders.

Have the intro movie accompanied by either "American Pie" or "We'll Meet Again", that would be sweet.

agent_c - if you read my post, only cutscenes are during the Great War. When you actually play it's after.

SuperiorStealth - The protagonist leaves nine days after the nuke, which the government advises irl.

The time-line says two weeks after the Bombs fell a Black rain covered the Earth making whole species of Plants and Animals go extinct. Maybe push it back a bit from 9 days to 3 months. And Raiders wouldn't be around that quick. Maybe the crux of the story is you made it to safety but you don't know the fate of your family and you have to go find out if they made it to safety or not.

The great war is a story that holds the fallout games together and explains how things got the way they are.

That would not work. Fallout is best post apocalypse not before. It would'nt be Fallout if it was prewar and shortly after. And 9 days is not long enough to wait for the radiation to go down.

And quite frankly, it would be hellish. And not fun, or playable. It would be horribley depressing. It would be miserable. It would have no story. It would be sick, in a bad way. It would be the most horrible thing you could ever see.

In FO3 the ghoul Carol in Underworld describes the world just after the bombs hit. It was insane, every bad thing in people let loose, looting, violence, every bad thing you could think of. Horrific radiation. People turning into ghouls or dying.

No one would want to play a game like that. I would never play a game like that.

It is horrible just hearing about it from her.

Fallout is about a disturbing, insane world full of mutants. Ruined cities. Factions. Awesome weapons and armour. Avoid the radiiation. Don't think too much about some things or they will freak you out.

Not some turgid, sick, little duck and cover type film.

Post apocolyptic games and films are best when they are set in the post apocolyptic now. The insane, disturbing now with mutants and lots of things to shoot. Ruined buildings to explore. Factions. Secret plots. Fun stuff.

some good ideas here, i have been thinking about a story line that is much closer to the war.
maybe set one (or two) generation(s) after the fall..

Raders would still be around, coz they take what they need from the weak, they would most likely be the ones with the chems
and they keep their women happy! (ah the life)

Those who had enough warning and were in the safety of a vault / shelter might not want to face the world they lost
(but their children might)

anyone who was caught out in the rads, but not killed straight up, like say commuters in the metro,
they would be gouls.

a government would still be clawing back control (maybe from a break away military)
which begsthe question why did the enclave wait 200 years to make a move?
plus we all know super muties are a super soldier program gone wrong!

i think a senario like this ticks all the fallout boxes,
(chems and ammo still be plentiful, rads would be higher, all "races" are there,
and most of the population woud have died of to give it that wastland feel)
although EMP would make all terminals useless within a certian radius

and it would be fun (i think)
